There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with four jumps cards from Newbury, Kelso, Stratford and Bangor On Dee, while there are a couple of all-weather flat fixtures from Lingfield and Wolverhampton.  David has one runner at Newbury as old favourite Shotavodka (pictured above) takes in the 3m2f handicap chase at 1.50pm.  He has gone well here a number of times in the past and should run his race once again - he is eleven years of age now and while the enthusiasm remains undiminished, it is not so easy to get his head in front these days.  This could well be his swansong so let's hope that he can put up a big performance - he has been a real asset to the yard down the years.  Tom Scudamore is in the saddle.

What a disaster for amateur jockey James Ridley at Newbury yesterday as he threw away the hunters' chase aboard Lookslikerainted with the race in his pocket.  He mistook the 1/2 furlong post for the winning post and eased his mount to a walk only for two rivals to come winging past him close home.  The stewards gave him a 28 day ban - I would have made him walk from the last to the winning post a thousand times!  You had to feel a little sorry for him, he is only an amateur and he was lambasted by punters at the track and on social media - he made a mistake, he has put his hands up and apologised - he has been given the most severe punishment the stewards can hand out so hopefully everybody can now move on.  Fair play to Paddy Power who paid out on Lookslikerainted as a winner.

I see that Sam Twiston-Davies is tipping up Paul Hannagan at 5/2 to win the flat jockeys' championship this year - that could be a good shout, although I would be keen to know if jockeys are allowed to advise you on betting?

Inspector Linley was spotted at Newbury yesterday and I don't think he was on a case!  Actor Nathaniel Parker who plays the inspector is a big racing fan and one year gave me all sorts of abuse in our Cheltenham Festival marquee (mostly warranted in fairness!).

I understand that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is one of the most stubborn people around.  Rather than calling it a day with the Gunners he is likely to sign another contract!  Not what plenty of the fans want to hear I am sure.

Stephen Hendry's return to the world snooker championship hit the skids yesterday when he was beaten 3-0 by Peter Lines in Scunthorpe.  In his pomp Hendry would have been different class - in sport you have to know when to call it a day.  Hopefully, he won't be repeating the exercise any time soon.
