There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Chester, Bath and Chelmsford as well as jumps fixtures from Kelso and Newton Abbot. David has three runners at Newton Abbot this afternoon; Prospera Pascha, La Vaticane and Gabrial The Great.  Prospera Pascha contests the 2m5f mares' novices' hurdle - she has shown promise in bumpers and has schooled well at home.  Hopefully the longer trip and hurdles will help to bring about some improvement.  La Vaticane runs in the 3m2f handicap chase having run with credit in the Grand National last time.  She will find this a lot easier although she does have to concede weight all round.  Gabrial The Great runs in the 2m5f handicap chase and this looks to be a good race for the £13,000 prize money.  Our charge ran well behind Fox Appeal last time out on this track and should be sharper for that.

Mister Drifter ran okay at Ffos Las yesterday on his hurdling debut with him just weakening out of it in the closing stages.  Perhaps a drop back in trip may be the answer?

The Chester Cup meeting starts today and it is one of the strangest racecourses you will ever visit.  It is completely round and low numbers are massively favoured in the draw, particularly in sprints, but it can even have an effect in long distance races such as the Chester Cup.  Looking at tomorrow's Derby Trial, the Chester Vase Aidan O'Brien is responsible for half of the eight runners - I am sure there are some great potential hurdlers among them!

I will be watching the football tonight between Southampton and Arsenal.  The Saints are available to back at 13/5 and that will do for me, while I will stick them in a cheeky little double with Real Madrid at 17/10 - you heard it here first!

No wonder Rory McIlroy says that he never thinks about prize money...he has just signed an £80 million deal to use Taylor-Made clubs and that follows on from his £160 million clothing contract with Nike.  Meanwhile, the Players Championship starts tomorrow at Sawgrass - it has the par 3 'Island' hole which should make for some interesting viewing.
