There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat fixtures from Ayr, Yarmouth, Lingfield and Kempton while there is a jumps card from Southwell.  David has one runner this evening as old favourite Purple 'N Gold contests the 2m4 1/2 f handicap chase at Southwell at 6.20pm.  He wears a visor this evening and should like the prevailing good ground.  He has won from higher marks than this in the past but does have to shoulder the welter burden of 12-2.  Tom Scudamore is in the saddle.

I was taken by the performance of Master Singer who was the sixteen length winner of a 1m2f Newcastle maiden yesterday.  Yes, I did say 16 length!  I wonder what trainer John Gosden said to his jockey?  It will certainly be interesting to see what the handicapper makes of the performance - he certainly looks a smart middle distance performer in the making.

I see that the former of recent four time winner Too Many Diamonds has said that she regrets having run him in a Taunton seller from which he was claimed.  I bet the former trainer of Make A Stand who Martin trained to win a Champion Hurdle still has nightmares!  Of course I claimed him from a Leicester claimer - MCP still says that he claimed him, but he know that it was me really!

The big match of the day is Ajax versus Manchester United at 7.45pm.  Let's hope that United are victorious - it would mean that they get back into Europe and are a best priced 10/11...it would also provide a welcome tonic for the city of Manchester.  The trouble is Ajax could clean up at 19/5.

I have been looking through the participants for the BMW PGA Golf and I noticed that my old mate Paul Hendrikson is not in the betting.  I will be having a little wager on Stenson at 14/1, Fleetwood at 33/1 and Poulter at 45/1 - that will give me an interest for the remainder of the week.

England play South Africa at 2pm on Sky Sports 2.  Bowler James Anderson faces a late fitness test on a torn groin muscle, if he doesn't pass England will certainly notice his absences.

Finally, the thoughts of the world are with the families of the people effected in Manchester.  I am only a simple East End lad, but I cannot see why this has to happen...
