There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with a flat card from Redcar, while there are two jumps fixtures from Newton Abbot and Stratford. Stable jockey Tom Scudamore has picked up a few outside rides at Stratford and a couple of them look to have decent chances.  I see that Simon Holt has agreed with me that there needs to be shorter gaps between races.  I know it would put a strain on trainers and stable staff but I am sure it is possible - I know, I have saddled up thousands of runners in my time.  As things stand, the whole process seemingly takes too long for the younger generation who seem to like a 'quick fix'.

I see that golf fan Prince Andrew was up at Birkdale earlier in the week to watch some of the Open.  He was spotted following Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson around.  Does his presence make it a Royal Birkdale?  He plays occasionally at the Royal North Devon course - with 150 years of history there, it is hardly surprising that they have a wonderful museum.

Talking of golf, I am a great fan of Andrew Johnston (Beef) - he recently said that the best thing that happened to him was going to the darts and getting a wristband which said 'free drinks' on it.  It would probably have been better still if it said 'free razors'!

England's lady cricketers will take on India at Lords for the World Cup.  The ground is a 26,000 sell out and it is live on Sky - the sport has a massive following in Asia.  I hate to admit it, but I watched a game earlier in the week and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finally, a thought for the day..."There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man"  (Sir Winston Churchill).
