Day two of our summer sabbatical and there are four meetings taking place on the level with the action coming from Leicester, Catterick, Chelmsford City and Nottingham.  The highlight of yesterday's action was the victory of Avon Breeze at Ripon yesterday - she won a £20,000 race on the 52nd start of her career.  Furthermore it was her second start in as many days AND she is in foal to Equiano...what a star!

Looking through the jump jockeys championship, I see that Harry Skelton is currently only trailing Richard Johnson by two winners so the title could be a close run affair.  It seems like I have said this on each of the last three years since Sir Anthony McCoy's retirement but it has not turned out like that.  The biggest problem I can see is that all 47 of Skelton's successes have come for his brother while Johnson's 49 winners have come for a dozen different trainers...he simply has too much firepower to fall back on when the core season gets underway.

The trainers' championship is a different kettle of fish altogether and the flat table illustrates this perfectly.  Aidan O'Brien is leading the way in the British table earning megabucks for his 20 winners, while in fourth place is Mark Johnston who has sent out 148 winners, while messrs Fahey and Hannon have also sent out in excess of 100 winners and are further down the list.  Surely it is time the way that the trainers' championship is decided (on the flat and over jumps) is altered?

The big football match tonight is the UEFA Super Cup Final between Real Madrid and Manchester United and United can be backed at 7/4 to lift the trophy.  United must be match fit whereas Madrid could be a little rusty - furthermore they will be without talisman Gareth Bale, who is currently injured.

What a round of golf from world number three, Hideki Matsuyama who shot a course record equalling 61 to win the Bridgestone.  He said that it was probably the best round of golf of his life...I wonder how many more 61's he will shoot?

I was delighted that England won the fourth and final test match against South Africa securing the series 3-1, bringing my bet to fruition.  Mind you, England need to sort out their batting and I would start by moving Moeen Ali up the order.  There are comparisons between him and Sir Ian Botham so that gives you some idea how much he has improved.  I don't think he is quite in that league yet, although he does drink less as he is teetotal!
