There are four flat cards taking place this afternoon with the action coming from Doncaster, Chester, Musselburgh and Lingfield.  The highlight of the day is the final Classic of the season, the St Leger at Doncaster - a Group 1 for colts and fillies over 1m6½f.  Geldings are not allowed to enter which is a particular shame for David Elsworth who wanted to run yesterday's Doncaster Cup winner, Desert Skyline in the race but he has already been gelded...never mind David!  Defoe looks worth an interest to me at odds of around 7/1 - he won't want the ground drying out any more, but he looks to be on the upgrade - perhaps he can score here because he can't score for Bournemouth at the moment!  The prize money at Doncaster this afternoon is a whopping £999,000...but why on earth did they not make it £1million as it just sounds better?

I see that it is former trainer Rod Simpson's birthday today.  You may recall that down the years Rod has been a very snappy dresser (and he could train a bit as well!).  Racing could certainly do with a few more characters like Rod around.  Many happy returns!

Talking of British trainers, there are plenty over in Canada as they have five of the twelve runners for the Grade One at Woodbine tonight.  You would need a fair chunk of prize money to cover those travelling costs, although the Brits do have the first three in the betting.

The football looks quite easy today - the only trouble is that the odds are prohibitive.  I will be having a little treble on Liverpool at 2/7, Tottenham Hotspur at 1/4 and Manchester City at 4/11 - as I say, not big prices but I would be surprised if any of them were beaten.  I hope Crystal Palace manage to get a result against Southampton today as I wouldn't like to see their new (old) manager Roy Hodgson start by losing at home - it certainly wouldn't do the (imminent) pension any good!

I see that boxer Billy Joe Saunders' eight year old son punched rival Willie Monroe in the nuts at a farcical weigh-in ahead of their middleweight title fight on Saturday.  I think these weight-in's are a load of balls and clearly so does Willie Monroe!

I went to a Pretenders concert last night...it was a tribute act!  Have a nice weekend...
