There are just two meetings taking place this afternoon with flat action from Ffos Las and Bath.  I'm sorry to say it, but both cards look pretty moderate and I again, I cannot understand why there is another weekend without a single jumps card taking place.  There must have been quite a lot of rain at Bath where the ground is currently riding good/soft - it is normally more like the M5!

There is a big day at Newmarket today with no less than 18 trainers opening the stable doors to the general public from 9am until 12.30pm.  Michael Bell will be parading his popular Ascot Gold Cup winner Big Orange but for me the highlight would be on the Warren Hill gallops as equine stars such as Enable, Cracksman, Ulysses and Marsha are put through their paces...it doesn't get a lot better than that!

There is also a showjumping competition with first-timers Silvestre de Sousa, Josephine Gordon and James Doyle giving it a go, while Frankie Dettori will also be taking part.  I am not sure how Frankie will get on...he once rode in a hurdle race at Chepstow for Martin aboard a horse called Gold Medal.  His instructions were to shut his eyes as he approached every hurdle!  Gold Medal was a brilliant jumper but when Frankie came back in afterwards he said, "Never again!".  Anyway, it sounds like a lot of fun, so if you are in the area I would strongly advise a visit.

They should be a great football match to look forward to this afternoon with Chelsea taking on Arsenal at 1.30pm, while Manchester United take on Everton.  You can back Chelsea at 5/6 and I will be putting them in a cheeky little double with United who are 4/11 chances.  That is short but Everton looked terrible in the week and this looks like a banker for United.  Wayne Rooney should get a fantastic reception back at Old Trafford - he was a superstar for United.

My county, Essex won the county cricket championship for the first time since 1992.  They were the only team to remain unbeaten in division one.  It is a mystery to me how the clubs can make these matches play as there hardly ever looks to be anyone in the stands.
