There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards from Ascot, Haydock and Huntingdon while there are also a couple of all-weather flat fixtures from Lingfield and Wolverhampton.  David has a runner at both Ascot and Haydock.  Vaniteux contests the 3.15pm race at Ascot - it is a £100,000 handicap chase over 2m1f and while there is not a massive field, it is extremely competitive.  Our charge has some decent form in the book but has the weight to match and needs to improve on his most recent efforts to figure.  He wouldn't want too much rain.  Meanwhile at Haydock, Champers On Ice (pictured above) runs in the stayers' hurdle at 2.25pm.  It is another valuable handicap worth £100,000 (it used to be the Fixed Brush hurdle but they have done away with those obstacles for whatever reason) and has drawn a big field.  Champers showed some excellent hurdles form when third to Unowhatimeanharry in the Albert Bartlett a couple of season's ago - form that would see him go close.  It will be interesting to see how he gets on back over timber on his seasonal debut - he is only a 7/1 shot and Tom Scu is in the saddle.

I am looking forward to seeing the Betfair Chase at Haydock this afternoon at 3pm.  Harry Cobden is aboard old favourite Cue Card who is coming back from a fall in the Charlie Hall Chase and it should certainly make for interesting viewing.

Yesterday's runner I'm Always Trying did not shape without promise in the bumper at Ffos Las, finishing fifth and shaping like an out and out stayer.  Most of the field had run previously and I am sure our charge will have learned an awful lot for the experience.

What a ride former England football star Michael Owen gave Calder Prince to finish runner-up in the charity race at Ascot yesterday.  He said that it was probably the fastest he has ever been on a horse and considering this was his first ever ride, I think that he showed a lot of bottle.  Furthermore, it sounds as if he wants to give it another go...he must be mad!

My team West Ham managed to earn a point against Leicester City so that has to be considered an improvement and some of the players ever ran around for a bit!  I think that Liverpool might beat Chelsea today and can be backed at 6/5, while I will be putting Newcastle (5/4) and Swansea (9/5) into a cheeky little treble.

Australia were bowled out for 328 in the first Ashes test giving them a small first innings lead.  Mind you, they have already claimed Cook's wicket for just 7 runs.  I don't think there is an awful lot between the two teams so it should be an exciting conclusion.  The Aussie's owe thanks to Smith who scored a great unbeaten 129.
