There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from York, Newmarket, Newbury and Hamilton, while there is a jump fixture from Aintree.  There is some good prize money on offer for a Friday, especially over the jumps so well done to the team at Liverpool.  There are no runners from Pond House today.  There was a very impressive winner of the Dante at York yesterday when Roaring Lion ran right away from his field and he looks a major player for the Derby judged on this evidence.  He certainly wasn't stopping and should he get the additional distance at Epsom, he could give favourite Saxon Warrior plenty to think about.  He only has a couple of lengths to make up on Guineas form.

There was another of those silly bans at Perth on Wednesday when young rider Jack Andrews received a two day ban for not riding his mount out for eighth place.  In this instance there was a difference of £350 in prize money between eighth and ninth places.  A two day ban certainly seems harsh, perhaps officials should give young jockeys a slap on the wrist for first offences such as these?  It is not as though any punters were affected by the result.  Do you really want to see horses get stuck into by jockeys for eighth place?  I think it must have been a quiet night for the stewards.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the new limits on FOBT's (bookmakers' roulette machines) will affect racing and also their business.  Until now, the maximum stake has been £100 a spin - now it is £2, that is an incredible drop.  I am not saying it is a bad thing, but whenever I go in a bookies it is normally populated by people on the machines rather than gambling on the horses.  I would not be at all surprised to see a number of shops close and jobs lost as a result of this and it is sure to impact on the amount racing gets from bookmakers.

Rafa Benitez has now gone odds-on to take the management vacancy at West Ham.  It seems strange to me.  Newcastle won't give him any money to spend on transfers and I can't imagine West Ham giving him any more to spend.  Anyway, I certainly hope the money is right - Benitez is an excellent manager who did a good job during his time at Liverpool.  Talking of football, I see that Mo Salah's boots have made it into the British Museum where they will be exhibited in the Egyptian collection.  Salah has become something of an Egyptian treasure since joining Liverpool and earning the Golden Boot in his first season with an incredible 44 goals.

The form of the tennis players is so in and out.  Just look at British player Kyle Edmunds who has been playing so well of late (including when beating former number one Novak Djokovic), yet he managed to get beaten by 21 year old unknown Andrew Zverev.  There seems to be very little between these tennis players that are outside of the top ten.

Following the success of Roaring Lion, I thought today's gag may be appropriate...Two lions were walking down the aisle of a supemarket when one turns to the other and says, "Quiet in here today isn't it?!"  Keep smiling...
