What a good performance from Celestial Path to win again at Uttoxeter yesterday afternoon under the welter burden of 12-5.  The application of blinkers and change of tactics certainly seem to have worked the oracle on our six year old gelding.  I know that Kiruna Peak fell at the last when looking dangerous but I think Celestial Path would have won anyway.  Do I sound like a winning punter talking?!  I see David has him entered again and it will be interesting to see if he tries to strike again while the iron is hot.  I will be keeping a close eye on Kiruna Peak over the coming weeks as he looks a surefire future winner.

This afternoon we have four meetings taking place, all on the level with the action coming from Pontefract, Wolverhampton, Hamilton and Windsor so unsurprisingly there are no runners from Pond House today.  I see that not one of the races at Windsor today has attracted enough runners to generate each way for three placings...a very disappointing turnout indeed.  It makes me wonder whether so much racing on this fast ground is a good thing?  It would seem that the trainers would think not.

There was a good questions and answers column in the Racing Post yesterday with former champion flat jockey Michael Roberts.  One of the questions was who do you most admire in racing and he replied Martin Pipe.  He went on to say, "I used to ride quite a few horses for him and he was a legend of the training game".  They also asked him who he could meet one person past or present, who would it be?  Roberts said, "Mr L Piggott, a great man and the best jockey I've seen in the saddle."  I have some great stories about Lester as he rode a few winners for Martin...as well as a few losers.

There were more interesting football matches over the weekend with host nation Russia beating Spain on penalties.  Meanwhile, England have now been installed as favourites to reach the final from the bottom half of the draw.  I will be backing Brazil at 1/2 to beat Mexico and Belgium at 2/5 - they are short prices but both should win.

Wimbledon starts today and I see that Andy Murray has decided to give it a swerve, a move that he hopes will extend his career in the long run.  It is probably the right thing to do as he will struggle on these grass courts if he is not 100% fit.  I wonder if the BBC will be trying to sign him up for the commentary team?
