With another dry and mild spell, the ground at many of the tracks remains unsuitable for a lot of our winter horses, despite a number of courses taking the precaution of artificially watering. Consequently, we only had a few runners last week, but there were some very good performances nonetheless with Leoncavallo in particular, excelling himself in the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las on Saturday.

Like so many others, I was delighted to see the start of the core part of the jumps season at Chepstow last Friday. Even so, despite heavy rain in the weeks prior to the meeting, the ground had dried out significantly in the days leading up to Friday and meant that we ran only Vieux Lion Rouge at the fixture. We finished off the week with a winner at Newton Abbot on Sunday, taking our tally for the new campaign to twelve.

With the rain arriving in some style (38mm in just a few hours on Tuesday afternoon), could it be that the winter jumping ground is finally on its way? With Chepstow’s Silver Trophy card taking place this weekend, it is that time of the year when the jumps calendar really begins to step up a gear and anticipation around the yard begins to mount. The horses are in good form and we were on the mark again last Monday with the ready success of Flammarion (pictured above) at Newton Abbot.

We were back among the winners again last week with Lady Reset (pictured above) continuing her memorable summer with a typically gutsy success at Warwick last Monday. We are yet to get into full stride yet, with many of the winter horses still coming along in their preparations, but we have eleven winners on the board and a further four flat successes which is not a bad return considering the limited number of runners we have had until this point.

Following on from three hectic days where we hosted owners, racing club members and National Racehorse Week visitors to Pond House, the staff were relieved that it was a quiet week on the runner front, with only one runner last Monday. That alters this week with a few more runners on the horizon; the first of those comes today at Warwick in the shape of Lady Reset (pictured above).

Despite only a couple of runners last week, it has very much been a case of ‘all hands on deck’ at Pond House. Away from the racecourse we have been frantically putting the finishing touches ahead of three stable visits. On Saturday it was the turn of our Owners’ to join us for the day, on Sunday we hosted the members of the David Pipe Racing Club and this morning (Monday) we opened the gates to visitors in conjunction with the National Racehorse Week, so it has been a busy few days.

The recent dry spell has certainly led to the ground drying out significantly and the racecourses have been short on runners as a consequence. We only had a handful of runners last week and we were a little unlucky not to be among the winners with Lady Reset, Oneonechop and Mr Tambourine Man all reaching the frame.
