To Fly Free runs at Southwell today

It is a glorious sunny morning here at Pond House and we have two runners well on their way to Southwell already.  Awesomedude runs in the maiden hurdle at 2.35pm with Tom Scu on board for the Value Racing Club.  He ran well enough on his stable debut over hurdles at Market Rasen last time and hopefully he can build on this.  He actually finished last of five but was beaten only 3.5 lengths.  He was held up in a race that turned into a sprint as they turned for home and this did not really suit him.  He will of learnt a lot from his first start over hurdles and our five time flat winner looks to have a good chance this afternoon.  The Racing Post have him at 5/2 second favourite.

Our second runner of the day is To Fly Free in the final race on the card, a two mile handicap hurdle at 4.50pm.  Fergus Gillard is back on board today and she wears first time blinkers running in the colours of the David Pipe Racing Club.  She was a winner at Fakenham last season and today's sharp track should suit.  She was a little unlucky last time at Newton Abbot, her first run back after wind surgery when she got rid of jockey Jonjo O'Neill at the final hurdle when looking like she would be placed.  She stumbled at the last hurdle and Jonjo came off.  That was over 2m2f and we think she will appreciate the drop back in trip this afternoon although it looks a very open race and she is 12/1 in the betting, a good each way price.

As well as Southwell today there four flat meetings at Salisbury, Ayr, Wetherby and Wolverhampton.  There is also jumps racing in Ireland at Roscommon.

It is the funeral service today of Barney Curley taking place in Newmarket.  Attendance is by invitation only due to Covid restrictions but many people are expected to line the route taken by the hearse.  Donations can be made to his charity 'Direct Aid for Africa' via the website www.dafa.ie/donate.

There is an sporting memorabilia auction taking place today where the number cloth from Shergar's record-breaking 1981 Derby win is the start lot.  It is lot number 627 in the sale and is accompanied by the original racecard and photos of Walter Swinburn entering the winners enclosure.  The lots can be found under grahambuddauctions.co.uk/forthcoming-auctions. It will be fascinating to see how much it might make.

Why is a pig's tail like getting up at three o'clock in the morning? It's twirly!  Have a nice day.
