If you are a fan of the jumps I'm afraid you are out of luck today.  There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Nottingham, Newmarket, Leicester and Hamilton whilst there is an all-weather flat fixture from Newcastle.  There are no runners from the Pond House team today, although we do need to declare this morning by 10am for Saturday's cards.  I hope a few of you heeded my advice yesterday by taking on the favourite for the big race at Carlisle, Cloudy Dawn.  She had a fair bit to find on her first attempt at Listed company and did not help herself by racing too freely.  This was only her third outing and can improve for the experience.

There was drama at Naas yesterday for their Oaks Trial as Holly Golightly managed to get loose before the start and needed to be withdrawn, whilst there was plenty of scrimmaging during the race.  The winner Willow hung right in the closing stages but was always doing enough, although I would be surprised if this race had much impact on the Irish Oaks which takes place at the Curragh in three weeks.

I see there is an interesting piece in the Racing Post today about racing pioneers and it features my great racing hero, Steve Cauthen, the American jockey who revolutionised race-riding in this country during the 80's and 90's, winning jockeys' championships and triple crowns on both sides of the Atlantic.  Much to my delight, I notice that there is also currently a book out about 'The Kentucky Kid' so that is definitely one I will be looking to add to my library at some stage.

Although England did not play in the Euro's last night, there was still plenty of exciting action which directly affected them.  The Group F matches took place between France and Portugal and Germany and Hungary and with England taking on the second placed team from that group it certainly made for interesting viewing.  With the scores fluctuating in both matches, England were set to play every team in the group at some stage last night!  As it turns out, England will take on Germany who grabbed a late equaliser to draw 2-2 with Hungary.  Germany looked laboured and it was a far cry from their impressive performance against Portugal which at least gives England a little bit of hope...I hope I haven't jinxed it!

Much as anticipated, England handed a thrashing to Sri Lanka in the first T20 cricket match last night, winning by eight wickets with almost three overs in hand, thanks largely to a great unbeaten innings of 68 from Jos Buttler.  The two sides meet again today and Sri Lanka have a lot of work to do if they want to turn the result around.
