There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat action from Newmarket, York, Ascot, Chester and Hamilton.  The big race of the day is the July Cup at Newmarket 4.25pm.  It is a Group 1 contest over six furlongs and it has drawn a very competitive field of 19 runners and there is precious little between them on official figures.  Last year's winner Oxted cones here in good form having won the King's Stand at Royal Ascot last time.  He should get his optimum conditions today and provided not too much rain gets into the ground, he looks sure to go well again.  There are plenty of potential dangers in the line-up including a host of improving three year old's.

I was unable to point you in the direction of a winner yesterday with Alcohol Free finishing a close third in the Falmouth Stakes behind Snow Lantern.  They all finished in a bit of a heap with only two lengths covering the first six and Alcohol Free failing to confirm Royal Ascot form with Snow Lantern or runner-up Mother Earth.  It says to me that, although they are clearly smart fillies, but there is no outstanding performer in the division.

We are back tomorrow with runners at Stratford's jumps fixture, whilst we will also have a runner on the level at Salisbury.  Come back then to find out more about those.

It is the women's final at Wimbledon today with world number one Ashleigh Barty taking on eighth seed, Karolina Pliskova.  Although Barty is the higher ranked player, Pliskova's game seems the better suited to the grass courts and she should give Barty all she can handle.  Neither lady has ever reached the final of the competition so we are going to have a new name on the trophy regardless of result.  That may not be the case in the men's final which takes place tomorrow after Novak Djokovic battled past Dennis Shapovalov in a match that was considerably tighter than the 3-0 scoreline.  Even so, it would be a major shock if he were defeated this weekend.

Of course, the football overshadows just about everything else this weekend with England taking on Italy in the final of the Euro's at Wembley tomorrow.  Just one more sleep!

As it's the weekend, I will torment you with just one more marriage joke...

Why are married women heavier than single women?
Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed.  Married women come hone, see what's in bed and go to the fridge!
