There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with a jumps card from Southwell and flat fixtures from Bath, Beverley and Brighton.  It is a case of slim pickings this afternoon with the best races of the day in terms of quality, a 0-95 handicap on the level at Beverley and a 0-140 handicap chase at Southwell.  Ironically, these two races also produce two of the smallest fields of the day which is a pity for the sponsors who have supported the race.

Today would seem to be the first day in weeks that we could be in for a dry one.  That wouldn't appear to be the case at Brighton where their small fields are obviously a result of the good/firm ground they have on offer at the seaside track.

Percy Street finished third at Newton Abbot yesterday afternoon although he didn't really cover himself in glory.  He was clearly hating the rain-softened ground but did at least pick up some prize money for completing.  He isn't the easiest to win with, but he is dropping to a very good mark and has the ability to win races so I am sure David will find something for him.

There are no runners from the Pond House team today, although we will be back with runners tomorrow at Uttoxeter.

With Euro 2020 and Wimbledon now in the rear-view mirror, things on the sporting front seem a bit quiet...for now at least!  Formula 1 returns at the weekend and it is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.  Lewis Hamilton will be desperate to do well in front of his 'home' fans, although he continues to have a mountain to climb to get on terms with Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.  Lando Norris finished an excellent third in the Austrian Grand Prix last time out and he could give the British fans more to cheer about this weekend.

Following hot on the heels from Silverstone, the Olympics start in ten days in Tokyo so the sporting action begins all over again!
