There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Goodwood, Newmarket, Doncaster, Lingfield and Hamilton.  There are no jumps fixtures on these shores today, but that doesn't mean that we don't have any runners as David saddles Ladykiller in the Summer handicap over 1m6f at Glorious Goodwood at 2.30pm.  A high class, Group 3 winning stayer in Germany, he has had only one start over hurdles since arriving in Britain.  This is his first run in almost a year and he faces a tough task conceding weight to all bar two of his rivals in a fiercely competitive handicap.  Derby winning jockey Adam Kirby is in the saddle.

The Group 2 Lillie Langtry is the best race of the day in terms of class with Wonderful Tonight a short-priced favourite to make up for the disappointment of missing the King George at Ascot.  Will the ground be soft enough for her today?  She should win, but there is enough doubt to give her a swerve at the prices.  The highlight of the day is the 6f Stewards Cup, a cavalry charge more commonly known as the commentators nightmare.  There are 27 runners, the horses regularly split into several groups and start in a dip where they are not visible to the race caller!  If you get this right, you may wish to have a go at the lottery tonight.  I will put up Chiefofchiefs as a tentative selection - he is on the same mark as when beaten just over a length into fourth in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and with conditions to suit, should go well under Jamie Spencer.

Bluebell Polka ran a more encouraging race on her debut for the stable at Bangor yesterday, finishing fifth on her first start over timber in the mares' maiden hurdle, whilst To Fly Free was disappointing in the handicap hurdle, with her chances severely hampered by the persistent rain showers.

I see that Manchester City are making a concerted effort to sign Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish in a deal that could be worth an English record of £100 million.  It would certainly be a major coup by the Citizens to secure a player that can create so many chances.

Qualifying for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix gets underway this afternoon and it looks as though Mercedes have the advantage at this twisty track with Red Bull seemingly on the back foot.  I have suspected that the Mercedes has been slightly the better car for some time, although the team and drivers have been perhaps underperforming somewhat.

My wife asked, “ how do they measure the depth of the ocean?”
"I don’t know," I replied, "you will have to fathom it out for yourself.”
