There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Thirsk, Newmarket, Ffos Las, Hamilton and Goodwood.  The best of the action on these shores takes place at Newmarket where the 0-100 handicap is the best race on offer - typically it has attracted only five runners.  It is a very different story on the other side of the Irish Sea where the card from the Curragh has three Group races on offer and 33 runners in those three races alone.  One model would seem to be working much better than the other, I will leave you to draw your own conclusions.

There are no runners from Pond House today, although things are looking busier next week with entries at Hexham, Worcester and Uttoxeter from Tuesday onwards.

David, Leanne, the kids and co had a good night at the County Ground in Taunton last night as Somerset beat Lancashire in a close match for the T20 Vitality Blast quarter-final.  Somerset progress to finals day now where the semis and finals take place at Edgbaston on 18th September.  Well done lads...keep it up!

Meanwhile, in the test match, England enjoyed another good day, batting throughout to reach 423-8 at the end of play - a lead of 345 runs.  There was a tremendous century from captain Joe Root and he is playing other-worldly stuff at the moment, averaging an incredibly 69.90 runs with the bat in 2021.

Apparently Christiano Ronaldo could end up at defending Premiership champions Manchester City.  That would be a real coup for them and a kick in the teeth for United, with whom the Portugese star shot to fame.  City already have an embarrassment of riches, but Ronaldo would certainly be the jewel in the crown.

My best mate keeps telling me to cheer up. He says things could be a lot worse...I could be trapped inside an underground hole filled with water.

I know he means well.
