There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Newmarket, Newbury, Ayr and Catterick, whilst there is an all-weather flat fixture from Wolverhampton.  You are out of luck if you are a fan of the jumps today, with the only action over the sticks coming from Navan.  Whilst there are three Group races on the menu at Newbury, the most competitive card today is at Ayr where it is Ayr Gold (and Silver!) Cup Day.

Sifting the winner of either of those 24 runner 6f handicap sprints is going to be tough.  If pushed, I would have a fiver on Popmaster in the Gold Cup.  He was a winner at Ascot last time over the distance, and is 2lbs ahead of the handicapper under a 5lbs penalty for that success.  He is still lightly raced and open to further improvement and is reasonably drawn in stall 11.  Hollie Doyle is in the saddle and she will do for me.

There could be another successful Irish raid today as they look to hold solid claims in the Group 3 contest for fillies' on the card at 3.05pm.  Head Mistress was a good winner at the Curragh in Listed company last time and seems sure to benefit from this extra furlong.

There are six Premiership football matches taking place this afternoon and perhaps the pick of them is Aston Villa versus Everton.  Villa have obviously found it tougher without their talisman Jack Grealish, whilst Everton are flying high since the arrival of manager Rafa Benitez.  This could be a tight contest.

It is finals day of the T20 Vitality Blast cricket at Edgbaston.  Of course, the teams have to get through the semi's first but we will be cheering for Somerset to beat Hampshire and hopefully progress to the final later on today...you can do it lads!
