There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with flat fixtures from Haydock, Newmarket, Chester and Ripon, an all-weather flat card from Chelmsford City and a jumps card from Market Rasen.  The pick of the action today comes from Newmarket where there are a trio of Group races headed by two Group One's for juveniles.  The Cheveley Park looks a red-hot renewal with the Irish raider, Sacred Bridge a worthy favourite following a facile success in Group 3 company last time.  However, the progressive Zain Claudette could be better value at an each-way price.

Aside from those Group races, the Cambridgeshire is a big betting heat and with over 30 runners, you would be forgiven for thinking that the race is something of a lottery.  That may not be the case however, and I have been told that Magical Morning is the proverbial Group horse in a handicap.  He is only a 6/1 chance, although that could be made to look big by 3.45pm this afternoon.

Iron Heart and Oneonechop did not trouble the judge at Worcester yesterday afternoon.  The former faring best of our pair in sixth place.  Unfortunately, the ground was softer than advertised following artificial watering and that was against both of them.

Don't forget, you can see the latest in our series of horses to follow from the Pond House staff with Julie Bellamy by clicking the image (courtesy of Katie Macey) below...

The European's took a bit of a pasting on day one of the Ryder Cup yesterday, trailing the home team 6-2 at the close of play.  They will certainly be looking for a good start today.

I see that Max Verstappen is going to start from the back of the grid in the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi this weekend after as a result of a penalty for an engine change.  Lewis Hamilton has made the bold statement that he will not 'bail out' of any more corners that he feels are his.  Easy to say when your opponent is at the opposite end of the grid.  This race looks very much about damage limitation for the Red Bull team.

There are seven Premiership matches taking place this afternoon, although it is the early kick-off between Chelsea and Manchester City that promises to be a real thriller.  Chelsea have home field advantage, but much as I don't like to sit on the fence, a draw looks the likeliest outcome to me.

My wife said that I should do lunges to help stay in shape.  That would be a big step forward.
