We were out of luck at Newbury yesterday afternoon, although both of our runners performed with credit.  Bumpy Johnson ran a nice race on his handicap debut over hurdles, finishing second, beaten only a length.  He jumped much better on this occasion and kept the winner honest all the way to the line.  The good ground may have been quick enough for him and judged by the way he kept galloping, he may appreciate more of a test of stamina under such conditions.

Dell' Arca was only beaten eight lengths into fifth in the Pertemps qualifier, running his usual game race.  He retains all of his enthusiasm and has shown more than enough to suggest that he can win something similar if given a little respite by the handicapper.

There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards from Hexham, Fontwell and Warwick and an all-weather flat card from Newcastle.  David does not have any runners today, although we are back with runners at Aintree tomorrow, including over the iconic Grand National fences in the Grand Sefton Chase.  Come back then to find out more.  In the meantime, stable jockey Tom Scudamore has picked up a couple of outside rides at Warwick, where David Noonan is also in action.  Meanwhile, Philip Armson makes the long journey all the way up to Hexham for one ride for his father.  These jockeys do rack up the miles - let's hope it is worthwhile, otherwise it will be an even longer journey home!

The Breeder's Cup gets underway tonight at Del Mar.  There is a great card featuring several European raiders, although for me, the proper action doesn't start until tomorrow.

Australia looked good yesterday in the T20 cricket world cup, destroying Afghanistan as they bowled them out for just 73 runs and then surpassed their total in just over six overs.  The other match between West Indies and Sri Lanka was more competitive, although Sri Lanka rarely looked in much danger of losing.

New Zealand should be far too good for Namibia today and I'm afraid to say, the same is likely to be true of India as they take on Scotland.

I have been in trouble with my only regular reader (my mum!) for not reporting on the English Open snooker which has got underway this week.  There were no early shocks in the competition, although world number one, Mark Selby was defeated in his last sixteen match yesterday by Jan Bingtao.  The likes of Judd Trump, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Kyren Wilson and John Higgins have all progressed to the quarter final stage.
