A bit milder this morning and no ground frost which is a good thing, whilst the biting wind of the last few days has also calmed for now.  There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with a jumps card at Leicester supported by all-weather flat fixtures from Lingfield and Southwell.  With all due respect to the various tracks, it is another fairly nondescript day with little in the way of quality.  The best race in those terms is the 7f handicap at Southwell tonight at 6.00pm which is a 0-105 contest, although that has only attracted five runners to compete for the first prize of over £10,000.

There are no runners from the Pond House team today and we did not declare on the flat at Lingfield for tomorrow so our next runners will not be until Thursday at the earliest when we have a couple of entries at Wetherby.  Declarations for those races close this morning at 10am.

I see that Boodles have been announced as the sponsors for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the forthcoming Festival.  That is obviously good news for the sport as with only seven weeks to go until the start of racing's biggest four days, it was not a good look to be without a backer for the most prestigious race.  The firm, a long-standing supporter at Aintree have sponsored (and will continue to sponsor) the juvenile novices' handicap hurdle which was known initially as the Fred Winter.

Rafa Nadal made it through to the semi-finals of the Australian Open tennis this morning, beating Denis Shapovalov in five sets 6-3 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3.  He said that he started to feel unwell midway through the match and told the crowd afterwards, "I am not 21 any more."  I can certainly sympathise with that one!

The snooker comes thick and fast at this time of year and less than a fortnight on from an epic Masters tournament at the Alexandra Palace, the German Masters starts tomorrow in Berlin and features many of the top players on the tour, including Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson, although there is no sign of Ronnie O'Sullivan.

The past, the present and the future were having an argument...it was tense.
