There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards from Leicester, Newbury and Ayr as well as an all-weather flat card from Southwell.  David has three runners at Newbury today; Paricolor, Duc de Beauchene and Grangeclare Glory.  Paricolor is the first of those as he contests the 3m handicap hurdle at 3.40pm.  A tough and consistent individual, he won from a 2lbs lower mark at Bangor on his penultimate start and whilst this is tougher, he should give a good account once again with Philip Armson taking 7lbs off his back.

Duc de Beauchene (pictured above) runs in the 2m6½f handicap chase at 4.15pm.  He won at Chepstow on his final start last season and ran a much better race at Hereford last time when runner-up over the minimum trip.  This step-up in distance looks sure to suit and he is now 2lbs lower than his last winning mark.  Looks to have a good chance, although he may possibly prefer the ground to be a little softer.  Tom Scudamore takes the ride.

Our final runner is Grangeclare Glory, who goes in the 3m handicap hurdle at 4.50pm.  He won at Newton Abbot earlier in the season and has run some creditable races in defeat since, although he has a couple of below-par efforts to overcome.  He looks worth another try at this sort of trip with Tom Scudamore in the saddle.

We will have two runners in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr tomorrow with Via Dolorosa and El Paso Wood representing the Pond House team.  They make the long journey up to Scotland today.

The draw for the World Cup will take place this afternoon, when England will find out who they will face in Qatar when the tournament gets underway in November.  Coverage is from 4.45pm on the BBC today.

There was a surprise in the Cazoo Tour Championship snooker yesterday as Luca Brecel beat Judd Trump 10-6 in their quarter-final showdown to earn a place in the semi's against John Higgins.  The other semi-final takes place today between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Neil Robertson and that looks to be a cracker.

Did you know that the person who invented the umbrella was actually going to call it a brella, but then they hesitated.
