There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards from Market Rasen, flat fixtures from Chester, Ascot, Nottingham and Ripon and all-weather action from Wolverhampton.  David has one runner today as Via Dolorosa contests the 3m handicap chase at Market Rasen at 1.50pm.  Our ten year old enjoyed a productive season last term, winning twice at Southwell and Fakenham.  He remains 5lbs above that last winning mark, but conditions should suit and Philip Armson takes 5lbs off his back and he has place claims despite the burden of topweight.

Ladykiller performed best of our runners yesterday, finishing a close second in the 2m4f novices' handicap hurdle at Worcester.  Having been held up in rear by Tom Scudamore during the early stages, he looked to be coming with a winning run between the last two flights, only for his effort to peter out on the run-in.  He possesses plenty of ability but is not the easiest to win with.  Even so, this performance proved beyond doubt that there are races of this nature in him.

Paricolor was sensibly pulled-up by Philip Armson in the 2m7f novices' handicap chase after a far from fluent round of jumping, whilst Nabvutika showed a bit more, being beaten just over eight lengths into sixth in the 2m handicap hurdle.

The big race of the day is the ultra competitive Chester Cup at 3.15pm.  It is a wide-open handicap over 2m2½f - the jockeys will have to keep a close count on how many times they have to go round!  Even over this sort of distance, owing to the constantly turning nature of the course, a low draw is advantageous.  If I were forced to pick one, I think you could do worse than a little each-way on The Grand Visir at a big price.  Runner-up last year, he is better off at the weights with Falcon Eight, although on the minus side, he is drawn out in the car park!  We will see if former champion jockey, Jim Crowley can navigate his way through.

What an effort from Rangers last night to earn themselves a place in the final of the Europa League, having beaten RB Leipzig 3-1 to win 3-2 on aggregate.  They become the first Scottish side to reach the final of a major European tournament since they achieved it themselves back in 2008.  They will play Eintracht Frankfurt in the final after they beat West Ham.

The F1 circus has landed in Miami for the first time and the new race is causing quite a stir.  The venue is around the complex of the Hard Rock stadium, home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins and will feature a 'fake' marina, where a number of luxury yachts will be moored on wooden platforms, made to look like water...seems like quite a lot of trouble to go to for aesthetics, but the Americans have never been shy when it comes to promoting their sporting events.  Practice gets underway today and it will be interesting to see how the drivers cope with a new track.
