After a slightly murky start to the day, the sun has begun to burn off some of the early morning mist.  There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with a jumps card from Cartmel and flat fixtures from Beverley, Newmarket, Goodwood, Windsor and Redcar...and once again, not an all-weather card anywhere.  What's going on?!  The pick of the action on these shores comes at Goodwood where they host Grade 2 and 3 events on the card.

The Celebration Mile at 3.35pm should be the highlight of the day, but yet again it has drawn a small field with only five runners despite it's Group 2 status and first prize of over £70,000.  Conditions look ideal with good/soft ground on offer, so why the small uptake?  It's not a new thing, so obviously there are too many other more lucrative opportunities elsewhere at this time of year.  For what it's worth, I like the look of Jadoomi, a progressive four year old who showed a good attitude when winning in France last time.  It could be a good day for champion jockey elect, William Buick who has a number of well fancied rides on the card.

With just the one jumps card on offer in the north today, there are no runners from the Pond House team, although we do declare tomorrow for Newton Abbot on Tuesday and we are sure to have a few at one of our most local tracks.

There are seven Premiership football matches to look forward to this afternoon with Chelsea versus Leicester perhaps the pick.  Leicester have made a slow start to the campaign with just one point from their first three matches and that could be compounded with Chelsea likely to make the most of home field advantage.  Liverpool will also be hoping to kick start their season and they have a great opportunity to do just that against newly promoted Bournemouth.  Manchester City should be too good for Crystal Palace, whilst leaders Arsenal will be favourites to extend their unbeaten run against Fulham.

England's cricketers are well on top after two days of play in the second Test against South Africa.  After bowling the visitors out for 151, England declared on 415-9 in their first innings - a lead of 264, thanks largely to great centuries from skipper Ben Stokes and wicket keeper Ben Foakes.  Play continues this morning at 11am and England have put themselves in a great position to try to level the series.

The Belgian Grand Prix takes place this weekend and there could be an opportunity for a less familiar name to step up.  Title contenders Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc will start from the back of the grid after penalties for using too many engine parts.  Even so, Verstappen looked imperious in practice yesterday and it would be no surprise to see him collect a good haul of points all the same.
