Paricolor 2nd At Cheltenham

There are three jumps meetings today at Kempton, Warwick and Wetherby and the stable has two runners at Warwick.  Ocean Heights runs in the opening contest on the card, a two mile novices handicap hurdle at 12.40pm.  Six horses were originally declared for the race but the likely favourite was already made a non-runner yesterday which leads a field of five.  Ocean Heights is a bumper winner and ran well for us on the flat but has yet to show much in his starts over hurdles.  This is his first start in a handicap off 95 and you would hope he would be better than this although I am just a little worried about the ground.  Tom Scu rides and hopefully he can take a step in the right direction and improve on what he has shown to date.

Paricolor runs in the Pertemps handicap hurdle qualifier at 3.35pm and regular partner Philip Armson rides.  There are already two non-runners in this race, both horses owned by JP McManus have already been taken out leaving a field of seven.  It still looks a competitive race but Paricolor is about 7-1.  He runs from just out of the handicap but I think a light weight in today’s conditions might be beneficial.  Our seven year old is a model of consistency and always tries his best.  He was a gallant runner up behind a useful sort at Chepstow last time and while I’m not sure he loves real testing conditions, he seems to handle it okay.  I am sure he will run well and fingers crossed he can be involved in the finished.

Twelve months ago, Gericault Roque finished second in the Classic chase at Warwick.  We have no representatives in the race today but I thought Grumpy Charley will go well at about 8/1.  He shaped like a thorough stayer in the soft conditions at Newbury winning last time and so I think the extra distance may bring about a bit more improvement.  At 2.25pm there is the Grade 2 Leamington novices hurdle.  It looks very competitive as you would expect but I have been following the Lucinda Russell trained Snake Roll who I fancy to run well in this.  He has won two races this season and was just over five lengths behind Tolworth hurdle winner Tahmuras at Haydock with our very own Sizing Pottsie in second.  The yard are in form and I thought he will give a good account of himself.

They have some good races on the Kempton card, with several of the horses that ran behind Remastered over Christmas lining up in the 1.30pm three mile handicap chase and so it will be interesting to see how they get on.

Alongside the jumps meetings today there is also flat action at Lingfield and Chelmsford.  In Ireland they race over the jumps at Fairyhouse and Davy Russell returns to action.  He has two rides and you wouldn’t bet against him riding a winner!

In yesterday’s action, Philip was pleased how his horse ran in the conditionals jockeys handicap hurdle at Huntingdon.  Lopes Dancer was one of the outsiders of the field but they finished fifth only beaten 12 lengths.  Samuel Spade finished second in the juvenile hurdle but were beaten while David Noonan’s mount Despereaux ran okay to be third and was not helped by jumping errors and hanging in the latter stages.

Today I shall be hoping to finish work on time to try and watch the Manchester Derby which kicks off at 12.30pm.  United are at home to City at Old Trafford and have been playing well of late but I think City might bounce back with vengeance after a poor performances against Southampton in the Cup in the week!  Hopefully it will be a good game and United will come out on top! Have a good Saturday and enjoy all the action.

Me: What do you know about atoms?

Son:  Very little…

Me: besides that.
