Today we have two runners on the flat at Lingfield, Pepsiwithacap and Talap and both will be ridden by Cieren Fallon. Pepsiwithacap runs in the 4.55pm fillies handicap over 1m2f. She was a good third at Wolverhampton on her stable debut last time over 1m4f and I don’t think the drop back in distance will inconvenience her too much. She seems to enjoy the all-weather and from only five career starts on the artificial surface she has won once and been placed three times. She seems to have come out of the race all fine from last time and I am sure she will give a good account again this afternoon. There are eight runners and she is about 8/1, fifth best in the betting.
Talap runs in the concluding race on the Lingfield and handicap over 1m4f. He has been running well on the all-weather in France this winter and I think he will enjoy today’s surface. He ran well to a point on British debut last time at Bath and I think he will have come on for that run. The jockey thought we should ride him a little differently that day to get the best out of him so we will do that this afternoon and see what happens! He is one of the outsiders of the field but he is a six time winner on the flat who should go well at an each way price. The handicapper dropped him three pounds for last time and although this looks a competitive little race, hopefully he will not be too far away.
We were due to have some jumpers at Newton Abbot this afternoon but unfortunately the meeting was abandoned before declarations were done on Sunday due to waterlogging. We have had a lot of rain in the west country and despite a few dry takes the course was sadly deemed not fit for racing. This therefore leaves a blank day for National Hunt racing in Britain but they do race over the sticks in Ireland at Tipperary. There are however three flat meetings here at Lingfield and Southwell and they are back on the turf at Newmarket. In Ireland they also have a flat fixture at Gowran Park.
Yesterday confirmations were made for the Scottish National at Ayr on Saturday. We had Only the Bold entered in the race but did not confirm him. The ground is currently good to soft and with no rain forecast it was decided that we would not be travelling to Scotland. Only The Bold will now go home for his summer holiday and he is a horse to look forward to in some nice staying handicap chases next winter. Jockey Jack Tudor will be travelling to Ayr on Saturday to team up once again with Kitty’s Light, the current 4/1 favourite so hopefully he has a great chance of winning the big race this weekend.
Last night in the football, Leeds were beaten by Liverpool 6-1. This evening Chelsea hosts Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Champions League quarter final match. They are already 2-0 after the first leg and I don’t see them pulling this one around. They lost their Premiership game at the weekend and don’t seem in a great place as a team. They have some good players but it is not working on the pitch at present. The other quarter final match being played this evening is Napoli against AC Milan. Milan have a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and I think they are most likely to progress to the semi-finals.
