It is a busy bank holiday day of racing with two jumps meetings and four flat cards with and a meeting under each code in Ireland. The Norfolk National features at Fakenham alongside jumping at Warwick while you can enjoy the flat from Beverley, Windsor, Bath and Kempton. In Ireland they race at the Curragh on the level with the star attraction being the seasonal debut of Minnie Hauk in the 4.10pm Mooresbridge Stakes and the jump action comes from Down Royal. The stable does not have any runners today. Jack Tudor looks to have a good book of rides at Fakenham and hopefully he can get a winner or two, Kitty's Light is one of his mounts who returns from over a year off the track.
It was a busy sporting weekend and impressive Guineas wins for Bow Echo on Saturday and True Love at Newmarket on Sunday. There was also an impressive win for Jack Pipe on Saturday at Flete Park in the pony race. On form, Jack was favourite and should have won but how often have we heard that before a race and the horse and jockey still have to go out there and do it. Jack rode a tactically good race from the front and controlled things and took the sharp bend much better this time than last! He kicked on inside the final two furlongs and won unchallenged. It was a great win for Jack and he had a lot of supporters there watching in the rain! Next stop Bangor in two weeks time for the first racecourse series pony race.
Saccary was our first runners of the new season and he ran well in the opening race of the season at Uttoxeter to finish second, he was only beaten a neck. He has now finished second on his last three starts but I don't think he has done a lot wrong and ought to be getting his head in front very soon. Grand Claremont found things happening a little but too fast on the fairly quick ground on his British debut. He was the final race of the day and the ground had dried to have some good to firm places by the time of his race. Rian Corcoran thought three miles if the ground is like this would have suited him better. The French horses do often take a race or two to adjust to the British style of racing so while slightly disappointing on this occasion, do not write him off just yet! Ben Lilly ran well enough to be third at South Hill point to point yesterday under Jo Supple. It was a competitive enough race and she gave him a good ride. Well done to Ashley Dascombe who had his first winner of the seaosn at Flete on Saturday aboard our former inmate, African Lady.
Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 yesterday while there was a good result for Spurs last night who beat Aston Villa 2-1. West Ham lost on Saturday so Spurs have hopped above them and are just out of the relegation zone. There are two Premiership matches today with Nottingham Forrest away at Chelsea this afternoon. They are just above the relegation positions and need something from this match. Manchester City are away to Everton this evening and also need a win with Arsenal having won on Saturday.
I met Tom Hanks once...
I asked for his autograph, and all he wrote was "Thanks".
So rude.
Have a great Bank Holiday!
