Purple N Gold - 2 Chase Wins This Season
The first jumping action of the week came with the two day meeting at Perth and we sent five runners on the long journey north back across the border to Scotland.  We were rewarded with the success of Street Entertainer in the claiming hurdle on Wednesday.  Street Entertainer has long been a favourite in the yard – he is one of those versatile horses that runs regularly and well, be it on the flat, over hurdles or over fences and he posted another decent performance on Wednesday conceding weight away to all of his rivals.  The sad epitaph to the race from our point of view was that he was subsequently claimed but that is one of the risks you take when you run in this type of race…we believe he is going hunter chasing and joining former Pond House inmate Locksmith and we wish his new connections the best of luck with him.

Last week was one of extreme emotions. On the one hand the horses continued in fine form with three winners including Low Key’s splendid Cesarewitch Trial success on the flat at Newmarket, while on the other hand we mourned the sad passing of long standing patron Lady Hilda Clarke.

Talk about the Great British Summer! Sadly, I think it is probably fair to say that we have seen the last of any meaningful sunshine with 110.5mm of rain falling at Pond House in July and a further 129mmm in August, these have been the two wettest months of the year so far. Indeed the rainfall for August has already surpassed the totals for April, May and June combined!

Despite only a handful of runners, the stable continued in good form with Purple ‘N Gold making a winning chasing debut at Worcester on Sunday and Standing Ovation landing Newton Abbot’s feature race, the Listed Lord Mildmay Chase that I had won in previous years with Star Of Germany and Shoegazer. Those two successes took us to eighteen wins for the current campaign and propelled us back up into second place in the trainers’ standings.

The stable enjoyed a good week last week with three winners at Fontwell, Market Rasen and Southwell taking our seasonal tally to 16 and while I am not normally superstitious, I must admit that I was pleased to get off the ‘unlucky’ 13 mark! With the winners beginning to flow again after the summer mini-break it is time to consolidate and build on the sound start we have made to the season.
