Following our visit from Ben Newton and Edward Whitaker last week, today (Monday) is the day you can see the fruit of their labours as Pond House kicks off the annual Racing Post Stable Tour series.  If you have picked up a copy, you will see that we have been busy sourcing more exciting new recruits to the National Hunt game and two of those certainly looked the part with deeply impressive debuts over the weekend.

As far as I am concerned the first meeting at Chepstow at the beginning of October traditionally represents the start of the jumps season proper with the quality of horses on show stepping up a notch.   Although the week just gone was the first in some time in which we have not registered a winner, there were still some promising performances to reflect upon and some exciting racing on the horizon with Cheltenham hosting their first meeting of the season this weekend.

With another three winners last week, our seasonal tally ticked over to thirty nine successes and the horses remain in very good heart.  Bengali was the ready winner of a bumper on her racecourse debut, Gevrey Chambertin scored his first success over fences at Bangor and Famousandfearless followed up his recent chase success with victory at Uttoxeter yesterday, while there were a number of other noteworthy performances through the course of the week.  Meanwhile Tom Scudamore was in good form in the saddle, securing his 50th winner some 7 weeks ahead of his previous best last year.

I’m delighted to report that the stable continues in excellent form and another three winners last week took our seasonal total to a very pleasing thirty-six.  The raiding party to Scotland yielded two winners from our two runners, while Unanimité laid down an early season marker for the juveniles with a ready success at Market Rasen at the weekend while there were also a number of other noteworthy performances.

Following another three winners last week taking our seasonal tally to 33, it is encouraging to note that despite a smaller team of summer jumpers than some of our contemporaries the good form of the horses has kept us very much in the hunt towards the fore of the trainers’ table through these very early stages of the season.  A strike rate of 28% confirms the wellbeing of the yard and I hope we can carry this momentum through the remainder of the season – with the big names back in from their summer holidays and their preparations now well underway, these are exciting times indeed.

As befits this time of the year, it has certainly been a quiet spell for National Hunt racing enthusiasts and following a break of five days the jumps fixture list only just splutters back into life on Tuesday with a card from Sedgefield.  Our only runners of last week came on Monday at Newton Abbot and what a good day for the yard it was too with a couple of winners and a second to show from our three runners.  Ainsi Fideles scored a bloodless victory in the novices’ chase, while Bathwick Man (pictured above) was the ready winner of the 2m6f handicap hurdle.

Last week was a quiet one with only three runners and it looks like being a similar story this week with National Hunt racing taking place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before we embark on another five day break.  Why there are such gaps in the calendar remains a mystery to me and personally I find it unforgivable that there shouldn’t be at least one jumps card on somewhere in the country on each of the weekend days – these are the days when people are most able to go racing, so why are we not making the sport more accessible?
