There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Royal Ascot, Thirsk, Beverley and Brighton, while there is a jumps card from Stratford.  The prize money at Ascot this afternoon is £1,795,000 for their six races, while over at Brighton they offer £32,000 for their seven race fixture...I know it is perhaps unfair to compare prize money with the Royal meeting but it does just highlight the problem with prize money at the basement level.  David has one runner at Royal Ascot today as Iniciar (pictured above) is top weight for the twenty runner Ascot Stakes - a race that he won in 2010.  Iniciar had some good form on the continent in 2014 at around 1m4f but this looks a big ask; Dougie Costello is in the saddle.  Meanwhile, Juste Pour Nous contests the 2m handicap hurdle at Stratford at 4.05pm - he has shaped with promise when finishing third on both of his outings over timber to date, although a mark of 111 seems high enough.  Place claims again under Tom Scu.

The ground at Ascot is officially good/firm and they have been watering.  Even so, from a punting perspective it looks as though you are going to want a horse that can handle a fast surface.

The world's noisiest bookmaker Micky "The Asparagus Kid" Fletcher turns 72 today.  Micky used to supply all of the other bookmakers with asparagus - he had a good horse with Martin a few years ago; Kailash who won his first seven starts.

If you ever go into the paddock at the races, make sure to exercise plenty of caution.  Even the paddock can be dangerous - just ask jockey Conor Beasley who was kicked in the chest at Carlisle yesterday.  Mind you, he still went on to ride at the meeting - these jockeys are built tough.

I watched England's under 21 side beat Slovakia 2-1 in the European Championship football.  They now go top of their division with 4 points.  There looks to be some good players on show with Premier League experience.  The star of our team was Alfie Manson and I am sure you will be hearing plenty more of him over the coming years.

The prize money for snooker players seems to be getting better and better all of the time.  World champion Mark Selby picked up nearly £1 million in prize money alone last season, although in fairness £375,000 of that came when he landed his third world championship in Sheffield.  Even so, you get moderate reserve footballers getting that much for warming a bench...I was going to use the term 'earn' but most of them don't!

I went to the doctor's the other day.  I told him that I was hearing music at the base of my spine.  He said, "You have a slipped disco!"
