There are four meetings taking place this afternoon, all on the level with the action coming from Pontefract, Wolverhampton, Hamilton and Windsor.  The wooden spoon today goes to Wolverhampton who offer just £30,000 across their seven race card.  I wonder who (apart from the tracks) make money when the prize money is set so low - it certainly isn't the owner!  What about stable jockey Tom Scudamore?  He was a winning flat jockey at the weekend as he landed the five furlong sprint at York aboard Tylery Wonder.  I did like the Racing Post's write-up, especially when they say, "It was hard to foresee a performance like this"...I am not sure if they are talking about Tom or the horse!

It is a shame to see that Epsom Derby hero Wings of Eagles has been retired after sustaining a fracture to his near fore sesamoid joint when finishing third in the Irish Derby over the weekend.  He will now embark on a career at stud, lucky chap!

A crowd of 10,000 turned up to Windsor on a perfect Summer's day yesterday and after racing they had a performance from Tony Hadley who used to be the front man for Spandau Ballet - for my younger readers, they were a top group back in the 1980's.  So why do Windsor put on such poor prize money?  You can tell that it is a sore point with me!  I won't mention it again this week (or at least until another track is obviously taking liberties!).

The tennis starts at Wimbledon today for the next fortnight, so that is something to look forward to.  Reigning men's champion Andy Murray kicks proceedings off with his match again Alexander Bublik at 1pm.  Bublik was a lucky loser and it was his father who text him to let him know the news that he was playing Murray.  It should be a good warm-up for Murray and a chance to build a bit of confidence following a couple of iffy weeks.  Meanwhile Bublik will pick up £35,000 for being a first round loser - not a bad day's work!

I hope a few of you followed me and had a few quid on Germany to win the Confederations Cup from Chile.  Germany won 1-0, although they did only field a reserve team - they seem to have so many good players.

Tommy Fleetwood won the French Open golf and in so doing, took his seasonal earnings to over £3 million.  Not only that, he actually wore some proper trousers for the final round instead of his usual pyjama bottoms!

Finally, a though for the day.  Nostalgia, it's not what it used to be!
