There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Newbury, Nottingham, Yarmouth and Haydock while there is a jumps card from Uttoxeter.  David has one runner this afternoon as Great Tempo (pictured above) contests the 3m novices' handicap chase at 6.40pm.  Our five year old has taken well to fences, finishing in the frame on both his starts so far, including when a good second at Ffos Las last time out on good ground.  A similar level of form would see him in with a good chance this evening in the hands of Tom Scudamore.

Joey Haynes has just made probably the most expensive telephone call he will ever likely make.  The young jockey was fined £290 for making a call outside of the permitted area at Yarmouth yesterday.  I wonder what the call was about?  I hope it was worth it.

With Royal Ascot taking place next week the trainer to follow could be Mark Johnston.  He has already had 16 winners this month and he will be sending a team of 20 or so runners down from Scotland.  Meanwhile, Percy Street is likely to be the only runner from Pond House at the Royal meeting.  He is on course to make his debut for the yard in the Ascot Stakes next Tuesday and will be partnered by Oisin Murphy.

What a good result for England as they beat Australia by three wickets in their one day cricket international.  Anytime we beat the Aussies is good news.  It should have been much easier having bowled the Australians out for 214 but a win is a win.  In fairness, they both look like pretty moderate teams...just ask the Scots!

The World Cup football gets underway today with Russia taking on Saudi Arabia in Group A at 4pm on ITV.  The Russians have to win and are a best priced 4/9 to do so.  Can you imagine the trouble that will occur if they get beaten?  Meanwhile, the press are suggesting that Jamie Vardy is the new Geoff Hurst...surely that is some sort of joke?  Hurst scored three goals in a World Cup final - I would be amazed if Vardy ever played in a final!

The US Open golf gets underway this afternoon at Shinnecock Hills, New York.  I wonder what the set up of the greens will be like?  Sometimes they can appear almost unplayable in these big tournaments.  With all this great sporting action on today, you know where I will be.  I have already claimed my chair and hidden the remote...Mrs Barnes will be pleased!

Thought for the day...a bit of hard work never killed anyone.  But why take the chance?!  Have a nice day...
