Today there are four meetings taking place, including a quality jumps card at Cheltenham and three flat meetings at Newmarket, Beverley and Kempton.  As you would expect from the home of National Hunt racing, the card at Cheltenham looks to be very competitive.  The stable has four runners at the Prestbury track - African Broadway, Poole Master, Qalinas (pictured above) and Goulanes.  African Broadway should certainly be better suited to this sounder surface having appeared not to enjoy the heavy ground at Newbury on his latest outing.

I see that Roger Stanley, part owner of Grands Crus and Gevrey Chambertin is 58 today.  I have played golf with Roger and I can tell you that the cycling enthusiast is definitely a better cyclist than golfer.  At least he is able to stay on his bike - he wasn't able to stay on many fairways!  Anyway, many happy returns Roger.

It was good to see Jimmy Frost enjoy a welcome winner at Exeter yesterday.  It has been nearly nine months since his last success and a lot can happen in that time!  Son Hadden was aboard the successful Union Saint - well done to both of them.

If you are looking to have a punt on the level it is worth bearing in mind that Richard Hannon's team (unsurprisingly) appear to be well forward.  It seems to me that the flat has taken a while to get going and that is presumably due to the downpours and rain-softened gallops holding the trainers up.  Richard Hannon seems to be the exception.

There is some good footballing action to look forward to tonight as West Ham take on Manchester United live on Sky Sports 2 at 7.45pm while Manchester City play Wigan in an FA Cup rehersal and Fulham play Chelsea in a London derby.

It is the funeral of Baroness Margaret Thatcher today and apparently people have been queueing up overnight to be at the front of the spectators.  How do they manage to get the time off of work?  I just hope the entire procession and ceremony goes ahead without any trouble.  Let's just hope that son Mark isn't the lead driver!
