It's a busy day with five meetings taking place this afternoon at Newmarket, Doncaster, Warwick, Epsom and Bath.  Sadly there is no jump racing to look forward to today but the Newmarket meeting is a high quality affair with no less than three Group races on the card including the Group 2 Prince Of Wales Stakes - it looks to be a very competitive race with the bookies going 7/2 the field.  The meeting at Bath hasn't attracted many runners - the lack of an irrigation system has meant that the firm ground sees only 46 runners across their seven race card and I wouldn't be at all surprised if there a few non-runners at the track this evening.

I see that it is one of MCP's old owners, Frank Farrant's birthday today.  Frank had some good horses in training including Valfinet and Heros Fatal, mind you the horse I will always remember is Liadett.  I mention him because David managed to get beaten on this one at odds of 1/3 in a race at Hexham...I just thought I would remind you of that one David!

A memorial service for David Johnson will be held at the Grosvenor Chapel, 24 South Audley Street, London on Friday 19th July starting at midday.  Afterwards there will be a reception at the Four Seasons Hotel, Hamilton Place, Park Lane.  Family flowers only and charitable donations to Cancer Research.

It was certainly an exciting first day of Ashes action yesterday, but it looks as though it is going to be a low scoring Test match.  It seems that the bowlers are better than the batsmen.  James Anderson managed to get the Aussie captain Michael Clarke out with an absolute beauty of a delivery.  It was an unplayble ball and probably one of the best of his entire career.  It doesn't look as though the match is going to last five days however, so I hope you don't have tickets for Sunday!

I know it is only July, but here are my three predictions for the new football season:

Paolo di Canio is going to have trouble at Sunderland and will doubtless upset many of his players
Luis Suarez is going to be a big problem for Liverpool

Wayne Rooney will be a problem for Manchester United

So there you have it...I see trouble ahead!
