With the abandonment of Fontwell this afternoon there is only one jump meeting remaining on these shores at Sedgefield. Meanwhile there is an excellent card at Leopardstown - the good news is that both meetings are live on ATR. The stable has two runners at Sedgefield - Great Choice in the 1.10pm race and Consigliere in the 2.45pm. Consigliere (pictured above) has been a wonderful servant down the years although our eleven year old has been a victim of his own consistency - he looks as though he could do with a little help from the hanidcapper. Even so, this soft/heavy ground will be right up his street and young Kieron Edgar takes a handy 7lbs off his back. There are only five runners and I am sure he will run his race once again. Our other runner Great Choice participates in what looks like a decent event for the track. He was narrowly beaten first time up at Uttoxeter and Tom Scudamore will be hoping he can go one better.
They say that it helps to be mad if you are a jockey and it would appear that the madness continues long after you have retired from the saddle. Former Pond House jockey Rodi Greene has announced that when the weather warms up a bit, he will be attempting to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groates - what is more, he will be trying to break the record time of around 44 hours. Rodi will be raising money for charity, so good luck to him with that.

I see that Newmarket Racecourse have managed to book Sir Tom Jones to perform on Friday 1st August. The last time the great man played at the track they had an audience of 22,000 people - the problem is that most of them turn up after racing so it is of no help in getting people interested in the sport. All it does is line Newmarket's back pocket

As most of you will be aware by now, I live in Brixham. If you are ever down this way, don't bother trying to find a Racing Post - they barely exist in Brixham! Martin came down to stay earlier in the week so I had to try to find a copy of the paper for him. I had to visit 5 newsagents before I could obtain (the only) two copies in Brixham. It is would seem like racing is just too expensive - just think if the tabloid papers didn't publish the racecards (and one or two of them don't), we would be in serious trouble.
Sooner or later the powers that be must realise that racing in this country is too expensive. By the time you have paid for your entrance fee, and bought some food and a drink, you have done a small fortune. Not only is the food expensive, in most instances it is pretty poor quality too. As far as I am concerned the public should be let in for free - they would soon reinvest their saved admittance with bar purchases or betting levy...clearly I am missing something! Have a nice weekend...
