Too Generous runs at Ludlow today
May I start by saying congratulations to Tom Scu who got his two winners at Market Rasen yesterday to make it to 100 winners for the season. Western Diva was winner 99 and Gifted Leader for Ian Williams brought up his first ever 100. Western Diva wa very impressive on her hurdling debut. Despite being keen she quickened away nicely, appreciating the step up in distance. She enjoyed the better ground and hopefully she can build on this promising effort in the future. I like Tom's honesty after the race, he said "the last time I gave Roger Brookhouse advice I told hom not to run Western Warhorse in the Arkle!" I think Tom is riding better than ever - it must be Lottie's influence!
Today we have five meetings, three over jumps at Ludlow, Wetherby amd Kelso plus flat cards at Yarmouth and Wolverhampton. David has two runners at Ludlow, Too Generous and Purple N Gold and both look to have each way chances. Too Generous ran well to finish second behind Saffron Wells last time out at Market Rasen and the winner then went on to finish second in the EBF final at Sandown. She has won a bumper on good ground, has blinkers on for the first time and will appreciate the step up in trip to three miles. Purple N Gold carries top weight in the 2mile novcie handicap hurdle. He was disappointing at Taunton last time but other than that has done well over hurdles and he is not without a chance this afternoon.
I was sad to hear of the death of Julian Wilson yesterday, aged 73 from cancer. I spoke to him quite a few times about his father Peter who used to be 'the man they can't gag'. He was a great reporter for the Daily Mirror and covered the odd World table tennis championships. Julian had a great voice and will be fondly remembered by all those involved in racing.
I did say I thought that David Moyes was on a sticky wicket as manager of Man Utd. It does look like this morning he could be on the way out of the club after losing the support of the players and board room at Old Trafford. There will be lots of managers lining up for one of the best jobs in football. I think they need to spend about £150 million top new players to put them back in the top four.
There is good football on tonight, Atletico Madrid versus Chelsea. Lets just hope the referee has a good game or Mourinho will be upset, he could soon be called the unhappy one!
