It is good to see with the new season under way that the Pond House string continues in good form.  Last night it was the turn of Makadamia (pictured above) to add to our total with success in the mares' novices' hurdle at Exeter under Tom Scudamore taking our tally for the new campaign to three.  I did say that I thought she had a sound chance and so it proved as she hung on gamely to score by a neck.  The handicapper should not be too harsh on her for this hard fought success.  Meanwhile our other runners Our Chief and Courtlands Prince both showed some promise in finishing fourth in their respective races and will have learned plenty for the experience - you would fancy David to find a suitable opening for them over the coming months.

There are five meetings taking place this afternoon - three of them on the level at Chester, Brighton and Kempton as well as jumps cards from Kelso and Worcester.  It is a quiet day for the yard with just one runner at Worcester; Off The Wall who goes in the 6.30pm race, a 2m7f handicap chase.  He can throw in the odd poor run, although if he puts his best foot forward he would have claims in the hands of Tom Scu.

The Chester Cup meeting kicks off today and it is usually quite a spectacle, and not just for the racing.  There are normally more than a few poseurs on display and it is like a footballing who's who in the champagne bar in the middle of the track - they are the only ones who can afford the prices!  Anyway, there is a good card to look forward to and remember, if you are having a bet a low draw around here is a massive advantage.

*****

Manchester United beat Hull 3-1 and part-time manager Ryan Giggs came on for perhaps his last appearance at Old Trafford.  He also said a few words on the microphone after the match - what a servant he has been for United down the years.  They played 18 year old James Wilson who scored two goals, an amazing experience for the youngster.

Tonight it is the turn of Manchester City as they play Aston Villa tonight on Sky at 7.45pm.  Luckily for City, Aston Villa have nothing to play for so this should be a walk in the park for the title chasers.  As someone once said though, "It's a funny old game!"...what a player Jimmy Greaves was, and he had a great sense of humour too.  Manchester City are 1/6 chances so we won't be getting rich there.

Meanwhile Sunderland play West Brom and are 11/10 shots - that looks worth an interest to me.
