The good form of the stable continued yesterday afternoon at Towcester and decent hurdler Top Wood (pictured above, courtesy of Matthew Wilkinson) made a winning start to his chasing career.  While he was made to work hard by outsider Silverman, I still thought that this was a creditable performance on ground that will have been plenty lively enough for him.  The runner-up has won his last couple of point-to-points and has the look of an improved performer and the pair finished well clear of the remainder.  These fences take a fair bit of jumping and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Top Wood finish up as a better chaser than hurdler - remember, he was rated 136 over the smaller obstacles and appears to be another nice prospect to look forward to.

Many happy returns to one of our early stable jockeys.  Jonothan Lower is celebrating his birthday today and was one of the great characters to have around the yard.  I could tell you a few stories about Jon, but sadly we would both be locked up!  By the way, he is 47...

David is off to Doncaster today for the sales - he tells me that he has spent countless hours thumbing through the catalogue in search of some nice recruits for the Pond House team.  I have to hand it to him, he seems to be a pretty good judge, consistently bagging some good looking prospects for the yard so let's hope he can do the same over the next few days.  If you are interested in joining us as owners at the yard, do feel free to get in touch with us for a chat about your requirements.

I was most amused by the quote from racehorse owner Michael Ng after his horse Another Wise Kid won at Redcar yesterday.  He said, "I work to keep my horses, not my wife!"  I know a few wives who would have something to say about that statement!

I see that Irish bookmaking firm have taken the somewhat surprising and ironic decision to open a book on who will be the next chief executive of competitors Paddy Power.  They make Andy McCue their favourite - I wonder if somebody knows something or if it is just my suspicious mind?!

Aidan O'Brien's 2000 Guineas third, Australia is now odds-on favourite for the Epsom Derby after the latest Trials failed to throw up a viable challenger.  My 6/4 about him is starting to look quite good.  I suppose if I were sensible I should hedge my bets...the trouble is that I have never done sensible very well!

The worst kept secret in football was confirmed yesterday as Manchester United announced that there new manager is Louis Van Gaal.  They managed to keep that one quiet...not!  I can see the headlines already - if they win a couple of trophies it will be "Double Dutch For United!"  Having said that, I reckon they could be waiting quite a long time to write those headlines...sorry Tony & Eddie!
