It's day six of our summer sabbatical and thankfully it is now nearing it's end.  Even so, there is plenty to keep us entertained this afternoon with six meetings on the level from Ascot, Ayr, Haydock, Lingfield, Newmarket and Redcar.  The big meeting of the day is at Ascot as they host the Shergar Cup meeting - it is always interesting to see how all the international jockeys fare against each other in a competition like this, let's hope that it draws a big crowd to the Berkshire course.  Meanwhile, former champion jockey and current title leader Ryan Moore travels to Haydock for a strong book of six rides and I would imagine there is a winner or two among them.  Indeed, William Buick, Kieren Fallon and Joe Fanning all have mounts at the track.

The wooden spoon for the day goes to Lingfield who have put up just £30,000 in prize money for their Saturday fixture and they narrowly avoid Ayr earning that infamy as the Scottish track fares little better with just another £1,000 on offer across their card.

I must say well done to tipster David Yates (Newsboy of the Daily Mirror) as he is nearing the end of a charity bicycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groates.  He is raising money for Racing Welfare and has covered 600 miles of the 880 mile journey.  Without wishing to be rude, David has always looked to be carrying a pound or two overweight so this should certainly help!  He will be appearing on the Morning Line on Channel 4 a week from today.

If you play a Test cricket match in Manchester you can almost certainly guarantee rain.  Consequently there were problems with the outfield yesterday - it was soaked near the boundary ropes.  They had heavy lorries doing work on the pitch earlier in the year and they have messed up the drainage so it looks like it will be going to five days after all.  I need England to win the match to go 2-1 ahead in the series!

Rory McIlroy continues to play other-worldy golf as the Irishman shot a second round 67 to go into a two shot lead.  He eagled the last...I think it is about time I went to the gym!

Football is back this weekend and my little wager will be on Leyton Orient at evens, Preston at 8/13 and Derby at 8/13...you heard it here first!
