Weekend Jottings

Day seven of our summer sabbatical and there are just two meetings taking place this afternoon on the flat at Windsor and Leicester.  Having said that, there is an excellent fixture over in Ireland at the Curragh with a Group 1 and Group 3 race on the card.  The Phoenix Stakes takes place over six furlongs and is worth £200,000 in prize money so it is a little surprising that only Richard Hughes and Jamie Spencer have made the trip across.  At least we can look forward to some jump racing next week - we have Newton Abbot on Wednesday and David has six horses entered up!

How can a child of eight catch a roach of 3lbs 7oz?  It's a fish of a lifetime!...the biggest I ever caught was just under 2lbs and that came from the River Lea at Dobbs Weir.  This young lad caught his on the River Frome at Wareham in Dorset.  I bet the banks will have plenty of anglers in the area after this!

I see that former Manchester United star Phil Neville says that "Sir Alex Ferguson did not like cricket, be he did encourage me to play in the summer."  There aren't many Scotsmen who like cricket or even play it...that is probably something to do with the wind up their kilts!

Talking of Scotsmen, Andy Murray managed to lose to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals in Toronto.  I thought it was a good chance for the British number one to get back into the winning habit.  He certainly seems to have lost it at the moment - it is only the second time that Tsonga has beaten Murray in their eleven meetings.

It looks as though former world number one golfer Tiger Woods has some serious problems with his game.  He missed the cut after the second round of the USPGA and he is probably still struggling with his back injury.  He shot another round of 74 and finished six over par after just two rounds.  He has no chance of making the Ryder Cup team as far as I can tell (and given his previous record in the Cup that may be no bad thing for the Americans).
