Enjoying their Holiday
It was a quiet week on the racing front last week and I enjoyed a few days in Portugal with the family. It was nice to recharge the batteries as it's now back to work the horses starting to come back in from their summer holidays. I am not sure quite where the time goes as it only seems like 5 minutes ago we were turning them out!! They have all done well though, have put on a nice amount of weight and we have a good starting point to begin training. Now starts a few weeks walking and trotting before we get them back on the gallops again. It is great to have a mixture of all the old favourites plus a few new faces to look forward to as well. Of course we are continually looking to add to the team through the sales and monitoring what becomes available in the private market. If you are interested in joining Pond House as an owner in any capacity we would be delighted to hear from you.
We did have four runners yesterday and while no winners, Purple N Gold didn’t have much luck in running being hampered on the bend and by a faller, he still ran his usual solid race despite all this to finish fourth. While he remains a bit high in the handicap you cannot fault his consistency and his turn will come to win again. My Brother Sylvest also finished fourth in the competitive handicap chase. Again another who is high in the weights he continues to pick up prize money and give his owners some fun
The story of the day yesterday was of course the return to action of Brian Toomey and while it was not the fairytale comeback winner I am delighted to see him back in action. A thoroughly nice young man he rang me to thank me for some words I had said recently and I would like to wish him well and every success back in the saddle.
I see it also did not take AP long to be back in the saddle and winning again!! He along with Richard Johnson were members of the winning team at the Barbury horse trials event on Saturday.
Looking ahead to this week once again there is limited jumps action. Street Entertainer holds an entry at Worcester in a novice chase while Susie sheep is entered at Uttoxeter on the same day. This could be our only runners of the week before we look ahead to the weekend. We have the big Summer meeting at Market Rasen on Saturday with a feature chase and hurdle. New Pond House inmate Kie may head our assault in the hurdle and could be joined by Purple n Gold who was second in the race last year. Dell’arca is entered in valuable chase, while other entries on the day include Instagram, Vieux Lion Rouge, Willem and Susie Sheep.
Also on Saturday there is racing at Cartmel where we have a few entries and on Sunday racing moves a little closer to home at Newton Abbot and Stratford. Keep checking Chester’s daily blog for more news of likely runners throughout the week.
On Sunday I am heading to a charity lunch in aid of Ed Barrett being held at Trebudannon, near Newquay. Ed worked at Pond House for a season a couple of years ago and unfortunately broke his neck in a point to point fall back in April. Thankfully Ed is making steady progress in hospital and hopes to move to Oaksey house in Lambourn in a few week’s time to continue his rehabilitation. We should hopefully all enjoy a good day with steak and strawberries on the menu and raise a nice amount of money for a good cause.
