Bashful Boy Wins at Nottingham!
We had just the seven runners last week, but it was nice to have two winners and a few places as well. It was a winner on the both codes for the team with Bashful Boy winning at Nottingham on the flat and Abaya Du Mathan winning at his beloved Ffos Las.
Bashful Boy made it three wins from four starts on the flat for the yard with a battling victory at Nottingham over 1m6f. Rob Hornby has been on board for all three of our geldings victories and it was another super win off a career high mark of 83. He was a little on and off the bridle this time around but Rob felt the ground was plenty quick enough on this occasion, with it being firm in places but he handled it okay and has come home fine which is the main thing. We went on the all-weather earlier in the year with our seven year old when the ground was too soft for him over hurdles and he absolutely loved it. He won at Lingfield and then we were disappointed he got beaten just a few days later but it turns out it was virtually impossible for him to win that day trying to give the eventual well handicapped winner a lot of weight and that horse is now rated in the 90’s!! He then has two quite heavy falls back and over hurdles, very uncharacteristic and he was going well in those races at the time. That prompted us to return to the level to give him some confidence where he won at Salisbury and then the other day at Nottingham. He has had two fairly quick races now and so we’ll give him a bit of time before deciding where to go next. I think there is more to come on the flat and he will be even better returned to 2 miles, while he will go back over hurdles as well at some point as he has been schooling well again at home. He is a horse that really tries for you and it is great for his owners, the Milldean Racing Syndicate.
Abaya Du Mathan loves Ffos Las and returned to his right distance he won for the third time at the course under Jack Tudor. He just seems to get in a lovely rhythm around there and is hard to catch. It was the first winner of the season for the David Pipe Racing Club and you to could be involved for just £120 a year, please see Club page on the website for more details or give the office a ring on 01884 840715. Ffos Las has now finished its jumping action for the summer so Abaya will have to find a new favourite course! In fairness I am not sure he is that fussy, he has been running consistently well of late on a variety of courses so I am sure he can be winning again elsewhere this summer. He loves this faster ground and is thriving at present as we don’t do much with him at home.
We also had three third places to go with our winners last week, with Moonlit Warrior running well on hurdling debut at Market Rasen and shaping like he will need further in time over obstacles. Dindin bounced back from a rare below par effort to be third while Yggdrasil also made a pleasing stable debut to be third at Bangor on Saturday and should be winning soon.
It is a fairly quiet start to the week on the racing front but our next runners will be at Newton Abbot on Wednesday where Myristica is looking to follow up her win at Southwell and Kolisi we hope will better his second last time out at Market Rasen. Jack Tudor rides both. On Thursday we will have runners at Worcester but keep checking the daily news for more updates on the stable runners.
Work Continues
The stable roof renovations on two stable blocks have been completed and those stables have been power washed, fogged and are now in the process of being painted. These stable were also fitted with new water drinkers and we have gone for the nose fill option. The horses put their noses in the bowl which presses off the lever to produce the water for them to drink. We have tested them for a little while and their horses seem to like them which is the main thing!
Horses at Grass
The horses are enjoying their holiday time but the warmer weather means more flies which are a bit of a pain but we use fly spray every morning and the chestnuts, the greys and those with more sensitive skin get sun cream on everyday as well!! Georgina from the office has been out and about with her camera in the fields and please see a few photos below she captured.
Sporting Week
Last week was a busy one for me on the golf course!! My clubs haven’t seen daylight for the best part of a year but I was delighted to play for charity asked by Alice Plunkett in Wiltshire on Tuesday. While my golf was nothing to write home about it was an enjoyable day. On Wednesday night I headed to Scotland for a business/social trip which included a visit to Kenny Alexander’s stud and a round of golf at Turnberry. I am delighted to report myself and Sean Tracey were victorious over Kenny Alexander and Josh Apiafi - I shall look forward to the re-match!!
