Barton Stacey was landing his first win since joining us when winning the 2m4f maiden hurdle at Towcester under Tom Scudamore.  Our former winning pointer had finished in the frame on all his previous starts for us but found the combination of this stiff track, faster ground and blinkers to his liking at his forged clear on the run-in having looked in a little bit of trouble turning in.  Now that he has managed to get his head in front, it is hoped that he can build on this success.  He should certainly continue to pay his way over the coming months, particularly when you consider that he also has the option of switching to fences.

Good old Bathwick Man has been a great servant to the yard and his owners (and our stable sponsors) Wayne & Sarah Clifford since joining us and managed to bring up a double on the Towcester card.  He usually manages to win a race or two each season and did so again in the very competitive handicap hurdle.  He received a great ride from Tom Scudamore, who was also recording his second win of the evening.

Broadway Buffalo maintained our good run of form with a facile success in the bumper at Worcester on Wednesday.  It was a good racecourse debut and while it is difficult to quantify the form given the number of newcomers in the field, he could still do no more than win by ten lengths.  He is from the family of Christdalo, who we enjoyed some success with a few years ago and will now enjoy a summer break.  He is one for his owners, rugby internationals Mark Cutoe and Andy Powell (pictured above) to look forward to.

It was an interesting evening at the Cheltenham Sales on Friday night and the market was strong once again.  There was some lovely bloodstock on offer and we came home with a nice new recruit, five year old winning Irish point-to-pointer Mr Trilby – he looks to be a decent prospect and is currently looking for an owner, so do feel free to contact us in the office if you might be interested.

On the subject of bloodstock, my father pointed out an interesting statistic to me that illustrates just what an influential stallion the late, great Sadler’s Wells has been.  Looking through the list of top ten sires in Britain and Ireland, the top two flat sires (Galileo and Montjeu) are by Sadler’s Wells.  Meanwhile, when you take a look through the jumps list, no fewer than five of the top ten sires were sired by the Coolemore legend – it is good to see his offspring continuing to fly the flag for this great stallion.

Anyway, looking ahead to this week, we will have a couple of runners all the way up at Hexham on Tuesday evening.  The lorry will be leaving early in the morning to make the 351 mile journey where Shoegazer will bid to add to his Hereford novices’ chase success in the 2m7f contest.   Spirit Of Barbados is our other runner and he participates in the 2m4f handicap chase – Tom Scudamore will be in the saddle aboard both.

Later in the week we will have a handful of runners at Newton Abbot on Wednesday, including possibly the talented Battle Group in the beginners’ chase.  He was last seen in action at Aintree’s Grand National meeting when running a great race to finish a close second to Saint Are in a Listed handicap chase.  As always, the latest news and details of our runners can be found on Chester’s Daily Chat.
