Taj Badalandabad - Winner at Chepstow
We did not have that many runners during the week last week but a double at Chepstow on Thursday kept the winners tally ticking along. Taj Badalandabad opened his account over hurdles at the second time of asking. He finished fourth on his hurdling debut up at Wetherby in what looks to be working out as a pretty decent race and it was great to see him do the job nicely here. He is still a bit novicey at some of his hurdles but he will improve with experience, he loves the soft ground and he should continue to provide us and owner William Frewen with some fun this winter. Smiles For Miles was our other Chesptow winner and it was nice to finally get this one’s head in front, his first victory of any description. The first time blinkers certainly seemed to do the trick and he travelled and jumped superbly, bar one mistake at the 4th last. He galloped all the way to the line on what was very testing ground to score comfortably and with a hike in the weights on the cards he will be probably run again sometime this week under a penalty. Providing the blinkers have the same effect again I hope he will be able to run well wherever he turns up, the options being Wetherby, Newbury and Doncaster.

What an exciting weekend of racing from Cheltenham! Once again the stable enjoyed a great deal of success at the Paddy Power fixture with the three day meeting yielding three winners for the Pond House team. Much as I enjoy the meeting, I must confess to a small amount of relief that it is all over for another year – with the stable enjoying such a rich history of success at Cheltenham’s November meeting down the years, there is inevitably a greater degree of expectation and therefore pressure that goes along with it.

Last week was another productive one for the stable with four winners taking our seasonal tally to a very respectable 47. The successes of youngsters Saint John Henry, Tullyesker Hill, Herbert Park (pictured above) and Bidourey (none of them older than five) bodes well for the future of the stable, while we still have an enviable array of more established stars to look forward to in the weeks and months ahead. Indeed, there is plenty to look forward to as the tempo increases with the close of the flat season and we have a raft of entries this week, culminating in the Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham this weekend.

It has been yet another busy week with a trip up to the sales at Newmarket punctuated by runners at the races and early closing entries. We picked up three nice prospects from the Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale, enjoyed a nice winner at Stratford when Street Entertainer bolted up in the selling hurdle under Tom Scudamore on Thursday and made entries for the Paddy Power Gold Cup, Hennessy Gold Cup and Greatwood Hurdle.

It’s all systems go now with the jump racing stepping up a gear not to mention the start of the Newmarket Horses In Training Sales commencing today for the next four days. There looks to be plenty of quality on offer and once again I have been burning the midnight oil searching for potential stars of the jump racing game to add to our team. I will be in attendance for the duration of the sale so if you would like to become a part of our family of owners, please do contact my office with your requirements. We have a proven history of finding the right horse for the right sort of money and with the world’s biggest horses in training sale currently taking place what better time to buy?

Following our visit from Ben Newton and Edward Whitaker last week, today (Monday) is the day you can see the fruit of their labours as Pond House kicks off the annual Racing Post Stable Tour series. If you have picked up a copy, you will see that we have been busy sourcing more exciting new recruits to the National Hunt game and two of those certainly looked the part with deeply impressive debuts over the weekend.

As far as I am concerned the first meeting at Chepstow at the beginning of October traditionally represents the start of the jumps season proper with the quality of horses on show stepping up a notch. Although the week just gone was the first in some time in which we have not registered a winner, there were still some promising performances to reflect upon and some exciting racing on the horizon with Cheltenham hosting their first meeting of the season this weekend.

With another three winners last week, our seasonal tally ticked over to thirty nine successes and the horses remain in very good heart. Bengali was the ready winner of a bumper on her racecourse debut, Gevrey Chambertin scored his first success over fences at Bangor and Famousandfearless followed up his recent chase success with victory at Uttoxeter yesterday, while there were a number of other noteworthy performances through the course of the week. Meanwhile Tom Scudamore was in good form in the saddle, securing his 50th winner some 7 weeks ahead of his previous best last year.

I’m delighted to report that the stable continues in excellent form and another three winners last week took our seasonal total to a very pleasing thirty-six. The raiding party to Scotland yielded two winners from our two runners, while Unanimité laid down an early season marker for the juveniles with a ready success at Market Rasen at the weekend while there were also a number of other noteworthy performances.

Following another three winners last week taking our seasonal tally to 33, it is encouraging to note that despite a smaller team of summer jumpers than some of our contemporaries the good form of the horses has kept us very much in the hunt towards the fore of the trainers’ table through these very early stages of the season. A strike rate of 28% confirms the wellbeing of the yard and I hope we can carry this momentum through the remainder of the season – with the big names back in from their summer holidays and their preparations now well underway, these are exciting times indeed.
