There is a busy day ahead with five meetings taking place this afternoon - three of them on the flat from Thirsk, Hamilton and Kempton, while there is also jumps action from Cartmel and Newton Abbot. David has just the one runner today, Alternatif (pictured above) who begins his chasing career in the 2m5 1/2f beginners' chase at 3.50pm. He put up a personal best last time out when a close second in the valuable Long Distance hurdle at Haydock on Swinton day and he has always looked a chaser in the making. Tom Scudamore makes the long journey up north with him and a clear round of jumping should see them go close, meanwhile Scu has also picked up a useful couple of outside rides for Gordon Elliott at the meeting.
It was a good day for former Pond House conditional jockey turned trainer Tom Dascombe as his filly Excilly won the handicap at Leicester yesterday afternoon. I thought that Jason Weaver conducted a great interview with the handler and his daughter Daisy. When asked if her father was a good trainer, Daisy responded 'Yes'...good girl, I wonder how much daddy paid you to say that?! Of course, I am only joking - we still hear from Tom from time to time and it is great to see him doing so well for himself.

Retired champion jockey A P McCoy is obviously still managing to keep himself busy after hanging up his breeches as he is playing in the Irish Open Pro/Am today alongside the likes of Patrick Kielty. It should make for entertaining viewing, although you might need some ear plugs to block out the expletives! A P is as competitive on the golf course as on the racecourse, although he was clearly better on one than the other! In fairness I am told that his game has improved in leaps and bounds since I last played him although that would not be difficult! It will be interesting to see how he gets on with his new tailor-made set of Ping clubs...good luck Champ!
Talking of the Irish Open, the tournament proper starts today and the bookies make host Rory McIlroy their 10/3 favourite. He may well be worth taking on this weekend as everybody is going to want a piece of him and he looked exhausted last week after missing the cut in BMW PGA at Wentworth. Although the undbouted class of the field, I certainly wouldn't want to be backing at those odds.

Another useless fact to send you on your way today. If you are thinking of going on a diet, don't bother - I have the solution...I quite often feel like banging my head against a brick wall, well now I can do it and lose weight. Apparently such an action will result in you losing 150 calories per hour. Having said that, I don't know how many brain cells you will be losing in the process - all I do know is, I don't have that many to spare!
