There are four meetings to look forward to today with three flat cards from Doncaster, Newbury and Wolverhampton, while the jumps campaign gets into top gear with the first Cheltenham meeting of the new season getting underway.  David runs Willem, Weather Babe, Houston Dynimo and Saint John Henry at Cheltenham and as you would expect they are extremely competitive races.  Willem showed his best form yet when a narrow runner-up at Hexham over 2m4f last time and is 1lb higher this afternoon.  He is joined in the line-up by Saint John Henry (pictured above) who won all three of his completed start last season and while he is higher in the weights, a big run is expected.  Meanwhile, Weather Babe has won her two starts over fences and I am sure she will give a good account even though this is by far her toughest assignment to date.  Our final runner is Houston Dynimo who would have a chance on the pick of his form, although he is due to go down 3lbs in future handicaps - he is forecast to start at odds of around 10/1.

I thought that Impulsive American ran a good race yesterday at Ludlow and was perhaps slightly unfortunate not to win.  Our three year old jumped well until a bad mistake at the last knocked the stuffing out of him when ahead and he was caught close home.  His turn cannot be far away.

I did say yesterday that champion jockey elect Richard Johnson could well have four winners yesterday and so it proved with him landing a 15/1 four-timer.  I hope a few of you had a bit on!

Although it is the Showcase meeting at Cheltenham this weekend, bookmakers have been quick to price up the Paddy Power Gold Cup on 14th November meeting and I see that they have Kings Palace as a best-priced 9/1 favourite to keep up the stable's fine tradition in the race.  It seems like a reasonable price to me.

The cricket started yesterday and it looks as though Pakistan are building another big innings in the second Test.  If they bat for most of today that will leave them three days to try to bowl England out twice.  It looks like another great batting surface and I wouldn't be in any hurry to bet on anything other than a draw.  Our spinners have taken some stick from Pakistan captain Misbah-Ui-Haq.

I might have a few quid on American tennis player Jack Sock at 11/10 to beat Gilles Simon in Stockholm today.  Yes, that is his real name - I wonder if he ever puts his foot in it?!
