There are only two meetings taking place this afternoon with action coming from Plumpton over the sticks and an all-weather flat card from Chelmsford City. The stable has one runner at Plumpton as Doctor Harper (pictured above) takes his chance in the novices' chase. A Grade 3 winner over timber at the Grand National meeting a couple of years ago, he has schooled well at home and should go well. Supreme Novices' Hurdle fourth L'Ami Serge is likely to be a warm favourite from the Henderson yard although the ground is likely to be bottomless and anything can happen.

With Channel 4 losing the broadcasting rights to racing to ITV I see that Matt Chapman has put himself forward for some terrestrial television work. Can you imagine how many people Chapman would insult? I like Matt but he does tend to speak his mind and he does have a very small mind! I wonder if ITV have enough money to cover all the law suits?! For all that, it could be worth giving him a go...he has more personality than the entire current racing team!

There are a couple of good Premier League matches this afternoon with a local derby between Crystal Palace and Chelsea at 1.30pm. I could be tempted by the 29/10 available about Palace - I am not sure that Chelsea have really improved enough for sacking Mourinho for them to be 11/10 chances away from home. There should be plenty of goals in the Everton versus Spurs game at 4pm and the 9/5 about Everton looks worth an interest. While we are on the subject, why on earth do the bookies offer such daft odds nowadays?

England football manager Roy Hodgson has said that he wants to continue managing until he is well into his 70's...let's just hope it is not with the England team!

I see that former world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has gone on record as saying that he wants snooker to be more like darts. Can you imagine that? If you open a packet of crisps at the Crucible the referee stops play! The rest of the snooker players are so touchy about noise or movement in the audience. Ronnie says that the darts players are the new rock stars - he must live in a funny old world.
