There is plenty of action to look forward to this afternoon with six meetings taking place on these shores. There are flat fixtures from Ascot, Catterick and Wolverhampton, while there are also three jumps cards from Ffos Las, Stratford and Market Rasen. The big meeting of the day of course is Champions Day from Ascot which marks the last day of the flat season and what a way to sign off! There is over £3 million in prize money up for grabs across the meeting with four Group One's and a Group Two on the six race card. Aidan O'Brien has three in the Champion Stakes with Ryan Moore aboard the filly Seventh Heaven. It could be a good day for the O'Brien team who are strongly represented in all the races, especially with the likes of Order Of St George and Minding.
I see that Ruby Walsh is jetting off to the States to ride in the American version of the Grand National this weekend. He rides the odds-on favourite Rawnaq and should he prevail, he will have won the British, Irish, Welsh, Australian and American Grand Nationals. His mount is usually ridden by Jack Doyle but sadly for him, he picked up a nasty injury last month.
I am pleased to see that we are back to proper football this weekend with Manchester City taking on Everton. City are 18/35 and I will be sticking them in a little acca with Arsenal at 2/7, Bournemouth at 17/20, while surely Stoke will beat Sunderland at 21/20. That should give me a bit of an interest this afternoon and put the bread on the table for next week.
The British Open golf was very enjoyable, although host Luke Donald is going to have plenty of time on his hands to do more hosting after missing the cut! He started badly and never recovered. Beef is playing well and is in second place - just think, if his beard gets any longer he will get a good job at Christmas!
