It was another chilly start to the day as you can see from the picture on the gallops this morning.  There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with action coming from Market Rasen and Hereford over the sticks while there is an all-weather flat card from Newcastle. Stable jockey Tom Scudamore travels to Hereford for three outside rides, his best chance appearing to come in the bumper.

There was a real shake-up in the ante-post markets for Cheltenham yesterday following the news that both Faugheen and Min will miss the Cheltenham Festival. There are so many things that can go wrong with racehorses, even at home in the yard…it is harder than you think even to get a horse to the racecourse.

The Racing Post seems to have David’s age wrong – they say he is 44 today but it looks as though the picture came from his school days! Many happy returns trainer...

I see that tennis is currently dominating reports of suspicious betting patterns – from 130 events currently being investigated, 103 involved tennis. I don’t think I will ever look at a tennis match in the same way again…I always thought that nice people played tennis, not like snooker, darts or even football – just ask Joey Barton!

Talking of tennis, I watched that umpire take the tennis ball right slap in the eye after Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov lost his wrag during their Davis Cup match against Great Britain. He could hit that ball 1000 times and never hit the same shot again – the umpire was just unlucky. Shapalov had to forfeit the match and was fined £5,000, so it was easily the most expensive shot of his career to date.

Alastair Cook has finished his tenure as England’s cricket captain and will now be replaced by Joe Root. Cook still wishes to play test cricket for England – I just wonder whether he would haves stepped down if we had a few better players. He could certainly be of great assistance to Root but remember; too many cooks spoil the broth!

I went on holiday with my horse last summer…it was self-cantering.
