It certainly isn't as bad out today.  I wouldn't say it was subtropical but with temperatures around 0ºc at least we were excused the daily regime of de-icing the car windscreen before setting off!  Even so the abandonments continue and with the cancellation of Kempton and Chelmsford (on the all-weather!) we are left with just the one all-weather flat fixture today from Southwell.  Unsurprisingly there are no runners from the Pond House team this afternoon.

It is a pity that Newbury have had to cancel their Betfair Hurdle meeting for tomorrow but it doesn't come as the biggest shock.  Plans are afoot to host the card on Sunday week, so let's hope that temperatures begin to pick up a bit.  I can't see Warwick going ahead tomorrow either, but there are plans to reschedule the meeting for Monday.

We drew a blank in the jumpers bumpers yesterday at Kempton but there were some promising efforts.  Home Farm House stuck on well at the business end of her race, finishing fifth.  An Irish point-to-point winner, she is bound to want more of a test than this in time and this was a promising effort on the back of an absence of more than a year.  Although unplaced, Major Robinson was not beaten at all far, whilst To Fly Free did not quite get the trip.

Iron Heart (pictured above) fared best of our runners yesterday finishing third, beaten less than a length.  Promising in three runs over hurdles this winter, he was a dual winner on the flat last term at distances up to 1m4f.  He may have found this 2m2f trip on the level just beyond him but he ran a really nice race all the same and looks a winner waiting to happen under either code.  He is owned by the Decimus syndicate and there are still a couple of 10% shares available in him.  If you would like further information on how to get involved with this handsome four year old please do get in touch.

Southampton and Chelsea progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Cup last night with victories over Wolves and Barnsley respectively.  Chelsea were less than impressive and will certainly need to improve on this if they are to go much further.

Despite going into a five day lockdown, the Australian Open tennis continues today without crowds.  Rafa Nadal came through a rowdy match yesterday where his toughest opponent was a lady heckler and he now faces Brit Cameron Norrie in the third round.  Norrie is the last British player in the tournament and he won't be going much further...probably!

The Champions League snooker continued yesterday evening but the tour heads away from Milton Keynes for the first time next week when the Welsh Open takes place at Celtic Manor.  Despite the event taking place behind closed doors, the players will think they are on holiday!
